Edna Myrle Hagan and Family (Shortcreek, OH)
« on: Monday 13 April 09 17:15 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where I can find any DAR-presentable records from Edna Myrle Hagan, b. Nov 1884 in Short Creek (Harrison Co.) OH? (On some records she's listed as "Myal" but I have relatives who knew her specifically and she's Edna Myrle.) I tried to find a birth record, but the only ones the courthouse has are scraps with her name and the date...

Any assistance would be really appreciated.

I know what the DAR is, but what does "DAR-presentable" imply?

The DAR only accepts specific types of birth, death, etc., records. Like a formal birth record.

If the state didn't have formal certificates issued at the time of the birth does the D.A.R. not accept a certified document stating that the information was found in their records? I do know they they were not as particular about prrof of descent years ago but since all D.A.R. members have ancestors born before formal registration there must be some form they will take.

Had a look at their website and they do seem to accept previous applicants details: www.dar.org/library/record_copy.cfm
Step by step suggestions here: www.dar.org/natsociety/content.cfm?ID=95&hd=n&FO=Y
And on their website are contact details for various matters so you might ask about this particular query to see what they recommend.

That's the problem. The "official" birth record for Edna Myrle Hagan is a one-by-three-inch scrap of paper that says she was born in Shortcreek.

I'm sorry. I've been contradicting myself.

I can mark Edna Myrle as my ancestor through family member's recounts of her. However, the DAR will not accept that. A family member told me Edna's grandfather or father - I don't have the paper in front of me this very second - was in the Civil War. He's the last person, aside from James Kerr, the Rev. soldier I'm tracing up to, that I'm 100% sure I'm related to; after that it gets kind of foggy up the tree.

Her grandfather and her father both had middle names of "Kerr" after James Kerr, whose daughter Jane supposedly married one of the earlier Hagan men.

I am a very new novice to genealogy and I'm sorry for the confusion. I'm looking for something linking Edna Myrle to her father, like a birth record or something.

Does the 1 x 3" scrap of paper say who her parents were?  Seems that's what would interest the DAR.  If so, you could present that along with some certification document from the records office.

That's the problem.

It just says "Edna Myrle Hagan was born ..." and the date. If it had her parents, the DAR would accept it. Belive me, I've called.

Was Edna a member of the D.A.R. herself? the link I posted earlier mentions they accept information from previous applications (explained on that page).

I am puzzled about you saying Edna is your ancestor but perhaps you mean relative and you are trying to join D.A.R. based on the same lineage as her? If this is the case you may have a problem as in the past D.A.R. were less careful about claims of descent from Revolutionary ancestors and many women who joined were not actually entitled to belong under the rules.

As far as a birth record goes- if the state has no birth certificate you can't produce one but there might be a way to get a certified copy that the courthouse record is the 'official' record of her birth. Problem might arise if the courthouse record does not list the names of both parents but you do need to contact D.A.R. to learn what you can do in this circumstance.
