Newtoun/town 1849
« on: Friday 17 April 09 23:16 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks',

Can anyone help me find a bit of history about Newtoun.(New Town), which is just outside of Pentcaitland.  It is now known as Boggs Holdings.  I have a James and Helen Robertson living there, c1844 - 1849.  James died in 1844 aged 79, Helen died there in 1849.  James was an 'enginekeeper'.

In the 1841 census James and Helen are at Gowkshill Midlothian...(Gorebridge I think).

What I would like to know is would James have worked at a 'Pit', and what would that pit have been.

Thankyou,

Lynda

Hi Lynda,
This is a great website about mining in Scotland - www.scottishmining.co.uk
There is an article on there about the Pencaitland Colliery.
