Death Look up, please
« on: Wednesday 22 April 09 11:13 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm trying to find the death date for Caroline Jackson, née Whiddett.
Caroline was born in Barham, Kent Q1, 1865.
She married Edgar Jackson (tailor) in Sheldwich, 29 Sept. 1886.
In 1897, they were living in Whitstable (on High Street) and Caroline declared the birth of her last child, Edith Florence, to the Registrar's Office 18 Dec. 1897.
I have the certificates for these last 2 events.
Caroline is not recorded with the rest of the family in the 1901 Census.

I had found a death record for a Caroline Jackson in 1896, and sent for the certificate even though there was a conflict between this date and the date of birth of Edith Florence ... I wanted to be sure ... and it's NOT my Caroline.

Can someone help me? When and where did my great-grandmother die?

Thank you so much for any light you can throw on the situation
Ann

Hi Ann

I notice Edgar said he was married & not a widower in the 1901 Census, perhaps if you looked at the 1911 census it would confirm whether Caroline had died.

Thanks Wendy,

That important detail had escaped my poor old eyes ...  8)
but, she should be somewhere in 1901! all I had found was an incorrect transcriptiion for a Caroline Jackson who turned out to be Caroline Hines ...

well, I cant see her (at least using the Barham PoB etc) with or without a surname in 1901  :(

nor a Caroline in the Whitstable area who might be her - did she have another forename ?

She's not with the family in 1911 - didnt look at the original page, so dont know if Edgar was a Widower status or not .....

Yes I found that one too. Wrongly transcribed.

Just been on the 1901 Census Leftover board and decided from henceforth to transcribe [correctly] the whole pages for upload to Rootschat. May help someone looking for 1901 familes as I do a lot of searches.

On all the records I have or have read, never seen another forename, just Caroline ...
Thanks so much ... probably will never know now ... their one living grandchild, my aunt now 93, has only the faintest memories of her family
Will keep hoping

Annie,

We have only just found your query relating to Caroline Whiddett and this family surname is one that we have been looking into for a number of years.

Like you, we could not find Caroline in 1901 nor any death records for her – but your posting has prompted us to look further and have found the following :

- There is a ‘Caroline’ age 36 born Barham, Kent, shown as being ‘married’ to a Wallace Rigden (Mariner) age 28, born Whitstable, Kent, who are at Great Western Tavern, St Mary, Southampton. (RG13, 1057, 34, 2)

- We cannot find any marriage for a Wallace Rigden prior to 1901 (and only one after, but not to a ‘Caroline’)

- In 1891 there is a ‘Wallas’ Rigden age 20, born Whitstable as a Crew Member on board the vessel ‘John White’ at Whitstable Pier Head (RG12, 711, 166)

- As you will be aware in 1891, Caroline Jackson was in the High Street, Whitstable

- There were two Wallace Rigdens of the right age born in Blean 12/1872 and 03/1973

- There is one Wallace Rigden Marriage in Blean 12/1902 to Edith Fanny Howard, who both appear together in 1911 with their family.

- We cannot see any other Wallace Rigden nor a Caroline Rigden of the right ages in 1911, nor can we see any deaths for them

What do you think ??

Had she run off with a younger man ??

Regards,

Al & Al

Annie,

If you fell our earlier suggestion concerning Caroline may be correct - then, we have subsequently found a birth of James Wallace Rigden in Southampton, Hampshire (i.e. the same district where Wallace & Caroline Rigden were in 1901 Census), during the quarter ending 09/1901. I guess if you get this Birth certificate, it may give a clue as to who his mother is.

Whilst we do not have access, we have also found by googling that JWR was born 11/07/1901 and that he appears in Ancestry.ca records - Canadian Soldiers of World War One.

Did Wallace, Caroline & James emigrate ?

Al & Al,

Thank you so much for all your hard work.

However, my Caroline Whiddett did indeed marry Edgar Jackson - I have the marriage certificate and she was the one who declared the birth of her last child, Edith Florence. Also, on the marriage certificate, the 2 witnesses were her brother Henry & her sister Bessie.

Her father was Alfred Whiddett, a baker, who also disappeared sometime between 1871 and the Census of 1881 and leaves no further trace!

The 1881 Census shows Alfred's wife Elizabeth (b. Wells in 1835 in Canterbury) as the head of the house but she is NOT declared as a widow and, in general, this detail was always faithfully registered.

Maybe, "disappearing" was a family tradition  ::)

And, that's where I'm at the moment ...

also, on the other side of the family, I have great grandparents who disappeared between 1891 and 1911 leaving my grandfather to be brought up by his own grandparents! Those two turned up again in 1911 with their four other children back in Newton Heath, Manchester where the story on that side all began  ;D

Just my luck !

Thanks again,
Ann
