SAXBY of Elstow
« on: Wednesday 22 April 09 21:50 BST (UK) »
I have traced one of my lines back to William SAXBY b.1806 Elstow, Beds but can't go further.  I believe he died 2Q1884 Bedford, Beds.  He married Naomi BEEBY on 11 May 1827 in Elstow and they had 10 children.
I can find no other SAXBY family contemporary with William.  In the censuses the name SAXBY is particularly prone to being mistranscribed in many variants: SARLEY, TAXLEY, SAGBY, LASBY etc. (As is BEEBY for that matter.)
The IGI has not proved helpful.
Does anyone have any early info on the SAXBY folk in Elstow or the City of Bedford itself?

Odd, as there are very few Saxby burials either in Beds. There's a Thomas buried at Bedford St Paul on 20 Nov 1812, but he's the only adult. The other four were all babies at Elstow 1839-46. I would check the parish register to see if there's any detail on the 1812 burial

Have you checked the Elstow microfilm to see if you can get any clues from the marriage to Naomi? Witnesses for example

If you check the Bedford Gaol site at http://apps.bedfordshire.gov.uk/grd/ William served two 14 day sentences for minor crimes eg stealing walnuts, where his birth town is again shown as Elstow.

There are no SAXBY entries in the Elstow PR up to 1812.

From the Hugh Wallis / IGI webiste the first SAXBY baptism is on 21 Oct 1827 & is William son of your William & Naomi.

The 2 Nov 1812 burial in Bedford St Pauls just says Thomas Saxby
There is a marriage in Bedford St Paul of a James Lane to a Mary Saxby on 22 Aug 1803, but that's the lot.

On the other hand there is the Elstow christening of Naomi Beeby, daughter of William & Hannah Beeby on 28 July 1807. They also had George 1798 & Charlotte 1803.

regards
John

My thanks to David and John for their comments and suggestions.
Celia, unfortunately none of the other Saxby names in the IGI are of any help: they are mostly children of my Willam Saxby but any other names cannot be connected to him at this time.  I'll keep trying.
