Help needed with Dingle research
« on: Friday 24 April 09 20:17 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Sorry to be a pest, but I need a bit of guidance.

My son-in-law has asked me to find his Irish Ancestors and I'm at a loss!

Luckily his mother was able to give me the name of the street her mother's parents were living when she was born and knew her grandfather's name, so I had no problem locating the family on 1911 census,  but I can't seem to find anything online to help me go back further.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Regards
Sandie

The census for 1901 is the oldest surviving Irish Census is will be put online on the National Archives website at some stage.

Full Civil registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths started here in 1865 (non-Catholic marriages from 1845) so that would be the next step. You can search an index to these at familysearch : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=2;t=searchable

(there are some hints on the searches on the Irish Resources Forum)

once you find possible matches you can order a research cert from the GRO : www.groireland.ie

to go back further then 1864 you will need to use parish records. Transcripts for a few counties are available on-line on the Irish Family History Foundation Website (pay-site), but Co. Kerry is not included at the moment.

Shane & aghadowey

I really can't thank you both enough.

When I found my son-in-laws ancestors in the 1911 census I told him I didn't think I would be able to find much more for him - I knew all the early censuses had been destroyed - but thanks to both of you I have been able to locate the same family in 1901, as well as a couple of possible relatives living nearby,  and top of that I have found the BMD indexes for the same.

Again, many, many thanks
Regards
