Lifeboat Edith
« on: Monday 27 April 09 12:12 BST (UK) »
At Fleetwood we are celebrating our lifeboats 150th year.
I am trying to find out about our fifth lifeboat called the Edith.
She was a gift from a Miss Carew of Shrewsbury and served at our station from 1887 to 1894 saving 19 lives
We only have one  photo of her in the New Brighton boatyard?
We would love to know if she was actually built at New Brighton as the image is somewhat obscure
It is any additional images we really need to complete our display
Cheers

Daveey - I've no information, only a suggestions, which are probably well worn ground, but in case:

Local newspapers for the Fleetwood area - were there any details at the time of the gift/launch/arrival of "Edith" that might help give information on where she was built?

Similarly you could try papers covering New Brighton for reports on build/repair of liefboats in general or of "Edith". Some libraries have online access to the Gale newspaper collection - mine doesn't but of your area doesn't some other RootsChatter may be able to do a search. Otherwise your local history library may be able to help with old newspapers.

Finally the RNLI Heritage Trust may be able to help with sources or suggestions or have some relevant information

Best wishes for the anniversary!

Hi Daveey,

I am currently part way through reading "On a Broad Reach - The History of the St Anne's on the Sea Lifeboat Station 1881 - 1925" by GI & JE Mayes and wonder if some of the Bibliography would be of any use?

Fleetwood Chronicle
The Blackpool Times
The Blackpool & Fylde Advertiser
The Blackpool Gazette and Herald
RNLI Library Poole

Perhaps it would be worth trying to contact the authors through the publisher?  Please PM me for details if you think it would be helpful.

Hi Daveey and Celia,

Confusingly the "Edith and Annie" was the No. 2 lifeboat at Southport from 1888 - so I think this is what the article will be referring to.
