Help with identifying William and Henry James COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 28 April 09 00:33 BST (UK) »
My Great Great Grandfather William James is shown on the 1871 Census as having been born in St Twinells in 1843 as his age is given as 28.

I beleive he was born on 22nd March 1843 at Woodsend in the Parish of Stackpole Elidor can anyone confirm for me the proximity of Woodsend to St Twinells which I take to be St Twynnells,  his father was Thomas James a labourer and his mother was Elizabeth nee James who I believe married on 7th April 1838 at Stackpole Eldior parish church.

Also on the 1871 Census living with William and his wife and son, was his brother Henry James whose age is given as 19 the census states he was born in St Lawrence but this is quite some way from Stackpole Elidor and the pembrokeshire Records office have no registration for a Henry James born around 1851/52 to the same parents.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

thanks

Dear Sir/Madam
1stly it is very common for families who live in the area of St Twynells, Stackpole, St Petrox and Bosheston to be baptised at what ever parish church was available in the area no matter where they in fact resided at the time, for the period of your interest.

I would refer you to ; http://www.revjones.fsnet.co.uk/stackgrpreg/register.htm,
please be carefull there a number of errors and ommisions here. I have re index'd the whole of Stackpole registers, so if I can help further let me know.

The Rec Off do not have any "registrations" that is the job of the Registar of B/M/D for the County, you perhaps have the two different offices mixed up.

Do not confuse Birth Mrge and Deaths with Baptism Mrge and Burial. Please note that parishes of baptism may have no relationship to the parish of mrge of the parents, equally the parish of mrge may have absolutely no relationship to the parish of baptism(or birth) of the bride or groom. One only had to reside in a parish for a minimum of 6 weeks to be shown of that parish at mrge.

Looking at Free BMD I note at least 4 births of a Henry James registered in the Pembroke Registration district for 1851-52 which covers all the parishes of your interest and more besides. The Pembroke Registration district covers all parishes in the old Castlemartin Hundred plus a few that where in the Narberth Hundred.

I trust the above is of some assistance

Thank you for the advise, since posting this request I have already obtained Henry James' birth certificate and that of both his mother and father and their marriage certificate, I have also obtained copies of the parish register pages containing their baptism records.

Having now visited Pembrokeshire I understand the terrain and have also from the PRO obtained copies of the parish registers relating to the baptisms, marriages and burials of Henry's father's parents.  Henry's father was William James who was born in 1843 and baptised on 13th April 1843 at Stackpole Elidor the son of Thomas and Elizabeth James, Elizabeth had been a James before marriage and their respective parents were Thomas James and Ann Gibbs for Thomas and William James and Ann Brunning for Elizabeth.

I am now in search of documents that might give some indication as to the parentage of this latest generation which would be on the cusp of known parish record entries.    Thomas James senior died in 1840 the age given in the parish register of burials and on his death certificate would indicate he was born in 1755, the age given on the 1841 and 1851 census and in the burial register for 1853 Ann James nee Gibbs would indicate she was most probably born in 1771.

Elizabeth James parents were William James and Ann Brunning, they were both alive at the time of the 1841 Census when William's age is given as 80 suggesting he was born 1761 and ann's age suggest she was born in 1776.   I beleive Ann may have lived in St Florence and her parents may be located there.

I am now in search of the parents of these four people all of whom would have lived and worked in the area.    Ann Gibbs and Thomas James Snr weree married by license hopefully that may give me a route to further information not normally found associated with marriage by Banns.

If you are able to suggest any likely parents for these individuals from your records I would be very much obliged.

Thank you

Whilst I do not have any info to assist immediately, I do presume you have obtained the will of Anne Brunning of St Florence 1842/123. Whilst she is the only Brunning shown could there be a connection with Browninge family.

All is not quite lost I note your interest in the Gunters and have passed your posting (interests) on, you may well wish to look at the following thread on the family;
http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.wales.pem.general/1909.3.1.1.1.1.2.2.1.2.5/mb.ashx

From my index of all names relationships etc in every will proven at St Issells for 1600 to 1858 I have already sent Linda all will extracts relevant to the Gunters.

With reference to the James & Gibbs surname castlemartin hundred does appear to offer some hope, have you looked at

http://www.revjones.fsnet.co.uk/stackgrpreg/register.htm

I will take an in depth look at my index's of Pembroke St Mary and St Michael and re post.

I am already in touch with Linda and following a line of research with her with regard to my Gunter line I have traced my line back to William Gunter and Rachel Griffith who married in 1781 but so far neither Linda nor myself have been able to clearly identify William's father.

I already used reverend Jones index thank you

I was not aware of the Anne Brunning will and will certainly look it up and place an order.  It is entirely possbile that Browninge Brinning and Browning are all derivatives of the same family name.

Thankyou for getting back to me so quickly
