Jones Family from Gwernaffield
« on: Thursday 30 April 09 10:42 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking information on the family of Robert JONES, born about 1808 in Cilcain (Cilcen) and married to Eliza (b 1812). Robert was a miner and they lived around Gwernaffield near Mold. On the 1861 census, they were living in Llyn Y Pandy. They had several children: John (1839), Elinor (1841), Sarah (1843), Elizabeth(1845), Margaret (1847), Thomas (1850) and Robert (1853) and Ann(1856).

I am trying to prove whether or not Ann Jones, the youngest of their children was my husband’s great grandmother. William EDWARDS married Ann JONES in 1883 in Liverpool, and eventually moved to America Farm, Gwernymynydd.

All I know of William’s wife Ann is that she was living at 15 Alton Road, Oxton on the Wirral at the time of her marriage. This is the address of a retired merchant on the 1881 census, so she must have been in service there. Her father is Robert JONES (deceased), miner on the certificate, which would fit with the JONES family from Gwernaffield. Her birthplace is recorded as Garth, Flintshire on the 1901 census and Mold, Flintshire on the 1891 one. I’ve recently found out that there is a Garth in the Gwernaffield area, so it points to her being from there.

My father in law remembers that his father had cousins in Gwernaffield by the name of MORRIS which would have been through Ann JONES – maybe children of one of her sisters?

Are there any descendants of Ann JONES or her siblings out there who can tell me whether or not she married William EDWARDS?

Thanks,
Buffy

Hello Buffy, do you have Robert & Eliza's marriage and or any of their children's baptisms?

Paul.

Hi Paul,

I don't have Robert and Eliza's marriage - haven't managed to track that down yet, but I do have baptisms for the youngest 4 children from Gwernafield Parish Register:

Margaret Jones    28/5/1848
Thomas Jones      1/3/1850
Robert Jones        1853 (forgot to write down the exact date!)
Ann Jones             31/8/1856

In all cases the parents were recorded as Robert and Eliza, Miner, Belan/Bellan (which is just outside Gwernaffield on the Mold side)

Thanks, Buffy

Hello Buffy,
Robert was baptised Nov 17 1853( I do that sometimes) ;D

I found these baptisms in Mold.
I'm not sure about these.
June 21 1836. Mary d/o Robert & Eliza Jones. Gwysaney. Miner :-\
July 28 1838. John s/o   """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""   :-\

I think these are yours.
Feb 10 1840. John. s/o Robert & Eliza Jones. Mold. Collier.
July 12 1840. Ellin. d/o. """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Jan 28 1843. Sarah. d/o"""""""""""""""""""""" Gwysaney. Miner.
July 19 1845. Elizabeth. d/o """"""""""""""""" Benlan. Miner.

The only marriage I could see about that time in Mold or Gwernaffield.
Mold Dec 7 1835.
Robert Jones(x). Bachelor. of this parish.
Eliza Owens(x). spinster. of this parish.
Witnesses. John Lloyd(x) & Sarah Powell.
(x)=did not sign made mark.

A couple of Robert Jones baptisms in Cilcain.
July 6 1809. Robert Jones. s/o Thomas & Mary.
Oct 19 1811. Robert Jones s/o Josua & Mary.

Let me know what you think :-\.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

I think you are right with the baptisms of John, Ellin, Sarah and Elizabeth, thank you for those. I know the family lived at Gwysaney at the time of the 1841 census. His widowed mother was living with them then and her name was Mary, which matches both of the baptism records for Robert, but doesn't give any clue to which is the correct one! ???

I'd found the marriage of Robert and Eliza Owens in the Mold parish register, but wasn't sure about it, however, I failed to find a likely marriage in Gwernafield, Cilcain or Northop, so it is probably them. :)

The other two baptisms may be their children too - if they married in 1835 it seens strange that they didn't produce any children for 4 years and then had several :-\. Maybe the first two died - there is no mention of them on any of the censuses and they would have been too young by 1841 to be living away from home, I would have thought, unless they were living with another family member.

Thanks for all your research,
Buffy

Hello
Jones and Edwards in Gwernaffield, my favorite subject!
But I don't see any direct connection with your families.
My grandparents were
Price Edwards 1882 - 1949
Annie Eliza Jones 1884 - 1958

Price Edwards was born in Bellan, the family have lived in or near Gwernaffield for at least 5 generations

I don't have much information on Annie Eliza, but her mother was Anne Jones.
Price and Annie married in Gwernaffield in 1915

I grew up in Gwernaffield in the 1950's. The only Morris family I can remember from that time was Emlyn Morris, the butcher, he had a small farm at the end of Cae Rhug lane.

Hope it helps
Regards Kyffin

Hello Kyffin,

Thank you for the information, but it doesn't look like our families of Jones's and Edwards are related.

My father in law, grandson of the Ann Jones that married William Edwards, was convinced that her maiden name was Morris, as they had a lot to do with their Morris 'cousins'. I've tried tracing the Morris's back and I haven't found a link with Ann Jones so far - I've almost convinced myself now that Ann's maiden name on my father in law's mother's birth certificate was incorrect and therefore I've got the wrong marriage certificate.

Family history research can be very trying at times!

Regards,
Buffy
