McCall, Ness, Arnott families from Fife
« on: Thursday 30 April 09 10:52 BST (UK) »
I am searching for ancestors or decendants of:-

George McCall b circa 1846 married Ann Galloway
Their son - James McCall b circa 1864 in Baillieston married Christina Ness b 1867

Both George and son James were head gardeners in Falkland (probably the palace)

The Ness family were coach hirers.

James and Christina's son was my grandfather, Archibald.

My grandmother was Mary Clark Arnott b 1897.  Her parents were William Arnott and Janet Gilmour Balfour.

They were from coal mining families in the Auchterderran area.

I would be grateful for any info on these families.

Do you know who Christina Ness's parents are?  My husband's family have Ness in his family and they are from Falkland?

Hi Sheenie

I'm interested in the Ness / Laing connection in the quote.  Have you the parents of Andrew by any chance?

Hi Chiad

Re the Ness/Laing family, Andrew parents were John Laing (b 1854 Kennoway) and Jane Birrell (b 1851 Falkland) - John and Jane were cousins.    If you go to page 2 of  'Laings in Fife and Beyond' message thread you will see my postings on my Laing lineage who originate from Carnbee in Fife so it's quite possible there may be a connection with your Laing family somewhere down the line.

Note you are also researching Rollo - my x2 Gt Grandmother is a Rollo from Fife - would be interested to see if there is any connection there.

Hi Sheenie

I note your comment about the Laings in Fife and will have another look at it.

I also picked up on your comment:

Note you are also researching Rollo - my x2 Gt Grandmother is a Rollo from Fife - would be interested to see if there is any connection there.

From somewhere I've picked up on a Rollo family who I think are all in Australia although from Fife originally but I can't now remember just how they connect into my tree:

JOHN ROLLO was born Abt. 1884 in Newport-on-Tay, Fife.  He married JANE HENDERSON TODD 09 Aug 1913 in Brisbane, Australia, daughter of WILLIAM TODD and SARAH BLACK.  She was born Feb 1889 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, and died 16 Mar 1981 in Brisbane, Australia.

Children of JOHN ROLLO and JANE TODD are:
i.      JACK LORD ROLLO, b. May 1915, Wellington, New Zealand; m. CONNIE SHEPHERD.
ii.     WILLIAM TODD ROLLO, b. 14 Nov 1916, New Zealand; m. SALLY PEMBERTON; b. 14 Jun 1914.
iii.    MARGARETTA SIMPSON ROLLO, b. 15 Jun 1917, New Zealand.
iv.    JAMES ALEXANDER TODD ROLLO, b. 24 Nov 1922, Queensland, Australia; d. 18 Mar 1982, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
v.    MORTON ANDREW ROLLO, b. 04 Oct 1926, Queensland, Australia; d. Apr 1956, Queensland, Australia.

I've also been doing a bit of research for a Rollo friend who heads up a legal firm near here.  His father had a relation of mine working for the firm - Isabella Ina Rollo Smith Pryde who was born in Ceres, Fife.  Her husband Alfred Gee's family have Australian connections as well. He was born in Bedale, Yorkshire.

I've another Rollo line where:

SUSAN ROLLO was born 10 Dec 1858 in Barnsmuir Farm, Kilrenny, Fife, and died 13 Jan 1884 in St Ford, Kilconquhar, Fife.  She married JAMES DRUMMOND 21 May 1880 in Anstruther Wester, Fife, son of STEPHEN DRUMMOND and HELEN ROBERTSON.  He was born 11 Jan 1857 in Burnside Farm, Kilrenny, Fife, and died 17 Apr 1933 in Charleton, Colinsburgh, Fife.

I am James Drummond's first cousin twice removed and I have Susan Rollo's line back to her Great Grandparents in about 1750.

I can't include all the information here but if you think there's any connection, please send me a PM with your email and we can exchange info.

Hi Chiad

Thanks for this info - just back from holiday today so will have a look at this as soon as and get back to you with a PM.  My x2 Gt. Grandmother was Wilhelmina Rollo b 1831 Logie to David Rollo and Janet Turpie.  David Rollo was a Farmer at Forret Mill, Logie.

Like you also looking at another Rollo who is in my late husband's family tree - Mary Rollo b 1815 St.Andrews to James Rollo and Bell Hardie, Mary married James Clark b 1811 Largo.
