Absent Voter 1918 Herbert Reynolds Wakefield
« on: Friday 01 May 09 15:53 BST (UK) »
Could anyone aid me in finding out why my Great Grandfather Herbert Reynolds.

I have his birth certificate born 16th September 1881,
I have him in the 1891 Census and also the 1901 Census,
I have his marriage certificate to Ellen Knowles in 1902, in Scarborough,
And also present in the 1911 Census, living at 13 Davy Street Wakefield.

Then I have come to blinding stop, until he is placed on the Absent Voters List for 1918, from whence he is absent from 13 Davy Street his Army number is given as 161939 a Gunner with the RGA, searching military records I am coming up blank.

I do believe that Ellen returned to Scarborough later on. From whence her family came from.

Wonder why he would be absent, would it be because he had died, or that he was a captive, or still in service, I have no record of his death, and don't know if he was killed in the war or died later.

Any help would be grateful

Hi Al

Welcome to Rootschat :)

I don't know if you have seen but there is a medal card for your Herbert. I also had a look on the CWGC site and he must not have been killed in action as he wasn't there.

Never knew about the medal card, thanks, never been able to bring his army number up with anything, will have another look, such a shame not to have been passed down info like this when it meant so much at the time, and for that matter still does.

Hi

Dont know exactly what happened to your Herbert Reynolds, but, my Grandad was in the First WW and he wasnt demobbed until November 1919 so maybe that is what happened to your relative.  Alot of men stayed behind to finish things off and help as they could, so he may well have been helping rather than being killed or missing.

Hi

Does the movements of your grandparent give any clues as to where Ellen and Herbert were? I know you said that you thought Ellen returned to Scarborough, have you a death for her at all? Is your grandparent still alive? If he/she is still alive don't give any details on the thread though.

No obvious deaths are showing but that is because not all are transcribed on the free BMD and unless we have some sort of clue when he might have died or how old he was it's very difficult to check the full indexes.

Did you manage to find the medal card?

Unfortunately Parents or Grandparents not with us, found a medal card but not for my Great Grandfather as army number not the same.

Herbert was born in wakefield whereas Ellen was from Scarborough, they were married in Scarborough but 1911 Census they were back in wakefield, and 1909 my grandmother was born in dewsbury, I am positive that they must have returned to Scarborough at some point as that is where my Grandmother was married and she lived her life on the coast.

Unfortunately as seems to be the case with alot of people they never talked about their parents and I certainly never met them.

As I say I have Herbert's and Ellens Birth certs and their marriage cert but don't have death certs for either of them, have everything for their parents and even their grandparents, but Herbert an Ellen are eluding me.

Thanks again Evie,

Found the Medal Card, sometimes can't see the wood for the trees.

Nice to have the Medal Card, silly how little things seem so big.
