Fromelles Missing - UK lads in the AIF
« on: Monday 04 May 09 04:00 BST (UK) »
Liverpool Annie suggest that I post this here as she believed you all liked a challenge.  Both Tim and I would be grateful for any help you can give us with these lads :)

Bright Blessings
Sandra

PS: Forgot to mention that the Battle of Fromelles apart from being WW1 took place July 1916 :)

Of the 192 Australians believed buried at Pheasant Wood, Fromelles, quite a number were originally born in the UK.   Although a few emigrated with their immediate families, many listed their next of kin as still residing in various parts of the UK.

The following list is those UK-born Australian soldiers buried at Pheasant Wood for whom no descendant has been identified.

If anyone is able to assist with locating descendants who may still reside in the UK, we would be exceptionally grateful to hear from you.

Thanks for sharing it with us,  ;) hope you get the help you need.

My husbands grandfather and his brother were at Fromelles.
Thankfully both survived - one lost an eye and the other taken prisoner.

Sandra

Do you have estimated dates of birth from their attestation papers? We can use that to work on the censuses for siblings and passenger lists etc.

I would love to follow this thread.  ;)

I heard or read that many Australians have come forward for DNA tests, but very few English. (silly me, cannot remember the numbers or the source  :-[)

Just looking at the names, there are some fairly uncommon sounding ones there, so I hope relatives will be able to be located, but of course it is more difficult working forwards. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with fairly substantial trees for some of these chaps.  ;D Ads in local newspapers may help if we get stuck.

[Fantastic work you are doing Sandra - lovely website too.]
