Skipton PR look up for Nicolas Hayworth
« on: Monday 04 May 09 16:54 BST (UK) »
I have reached a brick wall searching for Nicolas Hayworth. He was the father of John Hayworth b 1695. Johns baptism is recorded in Clitheroe  Parish Records but there is no trace of Nicolas. I am searching for him outside Clitheroe and I am searching near by towns such as Skipton. Nicolas also had a daughter Agnes b 1681 also at CLitheroe. I guess that Nicolas would be born circa 1660.
Most Lancastrians of the same name are called Heyworth but Hayworth appears more common in Yorkshire

Can anyone help please?

Hi there
May have found your Nicholas.  As you know you cant count on the spelling from hundreds of years ago to be like it is nowadays.  I have found a Nickolas Haworth without the Y as this could have been added later by a scribe writing it down. He was born on 24th February 1663 in Althram which is not too far from Clitheroe.  Clitheroe was an administration town and registered births and deaths for nearby villages. Hence the lack of info about your Nicholas.
His fathers name was Thomas.
I may be wrong with this but you have to look outside the box with names and places as they didnt have register offices in every village and had to register at the main big administrative town. If you look up Clitheroe and Altham for their history its very interesting.
I did look through lots of Nicholas Ha(y)worths but found most of them in the Lancashire area around Clitheroe.
Hope this helps you

Many thanks for your help Sandymc. This could well be the missing Nicolas. I also found some Nicolas Haworths at Church near Accrington. What puzzled me was that the baptisms of at least two of his children were at the Parish church in Clitheroe and yet there was no record of his marriage or his burial at Clitheroe.I will investigate your lead further. I am grateful for your assistance.

Kind regards
James

I have considered this further and  now have doubts. Nicholas baptised at Altham in 1662 is recorded also in the ALtham PR as having a daughter Mary baptised at Altham on16th Dec 1688. The Nicolas I am looking for had a daughter Agnes baptised at Clitheroe in  1681. Would therefore Nicholas of Altham have moved to Clitheroe and had a child baptised there in 1681 and then move back to Altham to have a child baptised in 1688 and then move back to Clitheroe to have his son John  baptised in 1695?? The mystery deepens. :-[

I have assumed that you were referring to Parish records as there were no registration offices in the 1600s

Hi James
I understand you still wanting to verify the story of Nicholas and thats OK by me. I dont know if you live in England, but the history of Lancashire at the time of Nicholas and John is very complicated. There was a lot of religious upheavel at that time, and also alot of movement to find work. Clitheroe is not far to walk in those days, as I mentioned the towns are all in the same area. The administrative town was Clitheroe so it doesnt mean they were born where they were Christened. I looked for Nicholas's death and as you mentioned cant find him. He could have died in a plague whereby there was no one to register him, the details may have been lost etc, it is nearly 400 years. Also there was the start of the immigration abroad to America at the end of the 1600's. So he may have emigrated and died abroad.
I dont know if I have found John for you. I found a John Heyworth b 28/04/1695 who married a Mary Walker in Clitheroe on 2/2/1722. It states that John was born in Colne Parish. If you look on a map its only 7 miles from Colne to Clitheroe and in those days not very far to walk. Also the women gave birth to their children at relatives homes so they could have been miles from where they lived just to get the child delivered. Its great looking at the history of the area. I come from Yorkshire so know what its like to be a Northerner. lol
Anyway, hope you find your Nicholas.
Take care    regards  Sandymc

Thanks again for your interest. You have the correct John. He married Mary Walker in 1722 and I have traced my direct line forward from John. I used to live in Colne and my mother lived in Clitheroe. so I know the area  very well The mysterious Nicolas lived at Hardhill Clitheroe which is no longer on the maps but was a settlement between Clitheroe and Worston.
John and Mary lived at stang top farm Barley ( the other side of Pendle Hill from Worston) and both were buried at St Marys Newchurch in Pendle.

THere are a few gaps in the CLitheroe records which might be another explanation    of why  there is no trace of Nicolas.

KInd regards
James
