Jones and Marshall of Ogley Hay, Staffordshire
« on: Thursday 07 May 09 04:58 BST (UK) »
I am trying to sort out a mystery.  John Jones of Twycross Leicestershire is listed in the 1881 census as living in Ogley Hay with his wife Eliza ( b. 1825 Shenstone) and three dependents listed as "other" - Robert Henry Jones b. 1866 in Ogley Hay, Elizabeth Jones b. 1859 Ogley Hay and Mary Ann Jones b. 1857 Ogley Hay.  I have found a marriage between John Jones and Eliza Marshall in 1860 in the Lichfield district and a birth of Robert Henry Marshall and Elizabeth Marshall which match those in the Jones household.  I am wondering if the children were in fact Eliza's neices and nephew.  Can someone check the census previous to 1881 for Ogley Hay and find out who the Marshall children were living with?  Also, whether Eliza Marshall was listed as married in any census prior to 1861?  Thanks for any help or direction anyone can give me.

Hi Karen,

Just to say the actual 1881 census doesn't list them as 'other' - the relationship column is just blank.

The 1871 census shows them as John and Eliza's children (as does 1861):

RG10/2916 8 9
Ogley Hay, Staffordshire
Walsall Road

John Jones, head, 44, Farm Labourer, b. Twycross Leicestershire
Eliza, wife, 45, b. Linn? Staffordshire
James, son, 19, Baker, b. Ogley Hay
Mary, dau, 14, scholar, b. do.
Elizabeth, dau, 12, scholar, b. do.
Ann, dau, 8, scholar, b. do.
Robert, son, 5, scholar, b. do.

I can't ID Eliza with any certainty in 1851 but I don't think she was Eliza Marshall - Staffordshire BMD shows that Eliza Marshall married the other man on the page, Thomas Neville, at Whittington St Giles in 1860.
