Missing greatgrandfather
« on: Thursday 07 May 09 11:32 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I have hit a brick wall with the death of my great grandfather John Quarrell Chaplin. John was born in Bermondsey, Surrey in 1867 and moved to Lenton in Nottingham when he was still a child.
He married my great grandmother, Elizabeth Cheetham in Lenton in 1891. By the time of the 1901 census Elizabeth is living with James Carey (later to become her second husband) and John is boarding with another family.
Something must have happened in those 10 years because John was one of "those members of the family that were never talked about."
I have searched all the death reords from 1901 to 1967 just in case he lived to ripe old age, including deaths at war and deaths at sea but to no avail.
Recent information has come to light from the WW1 records of a soldier named John Chaplin who lived in Grantham Lincolnshire who died in the early 1920s. He too was born in Bermondsey but was listed as 4 years younger. Unfortunately the page with the important details is missing.
I really would like to know what happened to him and why no one in the family would ever talk about him. All those that would know are long dead and gone so I may never find out Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards Paul

Hi,
There is an entry in the Army Pensions records for a John Chaplin born 1869 Southwark, signed on at Grantham. On later pages he was discharged at Nottingham, unfit for service,  next of kin Alfred Chaplin, Gregory Boulevard, Nottingham.
I see on the 1881 census John does have a brother Alfred, and Southwark is not far from Bermondsey.
The records are stamped deceased.
No sure reason to suppose it is your John though.

Best wishes
Cathy :)

Hi Cathy,
thanks for the reply. That is the  man I am trying to match to my great grandfather. Several bits of evidence don't quite fit at the moment. I am now trying to find information about the soldiers earlier life to see he does turn out to be the John Chaplin I am looking for.

It's just a thought, but divorce unless very wealthy was not common in the late 1800's, early 1900's. So if  Elizabeth married again, it was most likely after the death of John.

On the first war Paul, the max. age was i believe, supposed to be forty, so 47 would have been pushing it for enlistment in 1914.
