Hi Pete - I'm not sure if this will be of any help to you but, prior to 1844, a lot of the north of Northumberland (principally the south bank of the Tweed), was part of the Bishop of Durham's estates and was therefore considered to be a detached part of the county of Durham. Certainly, places like Norham and Tweedmouth were part of this.

Mike, thanks for your reply It seems most of Northumberland was in the sway of Durham Bishops.
Jora, thank you once again.

Hi Pete,
The probates and wills are held at Durham University.
Durham and Northumberland probate records, 1527-1857, they're due to go live this summer (fingers crossed) and will be available for free.
