Matilda Linley is shown as granddaughter to John Gillatt in 1861 census of East Butterwick.

Matilda was born in East Butterwick c1846.

The only daughters I can find for John & Mary Gillatt are Ester (or Hester) bapt. 1830 and Sarah bapt. 1833.

Cannot find any other records for Matilda, Ester or Sarah or 1841 census for John and his family.

Martin.

Hi Martin,

According to 1851, Matilda was the daughter of George Lindley and his wife Matilda born Doncaster ca. 1819 - do you want the full details?

She appears as Matilda LINDLEY aged 5 in 1851, dau of George and Matilda LINDLEY.

George LINDLEY married Matilda KIRBY 17 May 1837 Messingham.

I believe Mrs GILLATT was Mary KIRBY before marriage, wasn't she?

Matilda's baptism appears in the IGI as a submitted entry, not in the "regular" Hatfield batch.

EDIT: Bonsoir Tati :)

Thank you one and all.

Geoff,

You are quite right Mary Kirby married John Gillatt in 1819.  Her parents were Thomas and Ann Kirby.  Presumably, Matilda's mother Mary married a Kirby (1800-1820) or maybe Mary was a single mum.

I am still struggling with the census entry describing Matilda as granddaughter.

Matilda was certainly granddaughter of Mary (nee KIRBY, who was a single mum incidentally) but not necessarily a blood relation of Mr GILLATT.

Hello Geoff,

I have DOB for Mary Kirby as 11.03.1804 and baptism for Matilda 10.01.1819.  I think Mary had an eventful 14th birthday.

Have finally found Matilda Lindley in 1841 census; (spelling somewhat creative) Makld Lindley and husband Geo Lindley.

Still not found John Gillatt and family in 1841.
