gloucester pubs
« on: Monday 21 February 05 17:32 GMT (UK) »
My ancestors (William and Eliza Nippers) were the innkeeper and innkeepers wife at the "Ring of bells" pub at 55 Thomas Street, Gloucester in 1881.
Does anyone know if Thomas Street is still there and what happened to the pub ?.

Hi,

I don't know if this will be of any help to you:

I don't know what area you are referring to in Gloucester, but I  did find this below ( In the Bristol area of Gloucestershire, if this is the same pub you are referring to).
It's  before your ancestors time mind you:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Bristol/RINGERtoZINCRAFT.html

Pigot's Directory for 1830
STONE James           Tavern / Public House         Ring of Bells, Thomas St, Bristol

you could also try http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ to see if they are listed later on.

I tried searching BT online phonebook for that same  above pub which was listed in  Bristol , pigot's directory1830, but no joy, just this one, and  I'm not sure if the below is  a pub  . I searched on BT web site  with the name "ring of bells" "bristol" and just came up with this one below :

Ring Of Bells
Henfield Rd
Coalpit Heath, Bristol
BS36 2TG

multi map results ( http://www.multimap.com/)   for Thomas st in  Bristol:
 - 1 Thomas Street, BS1, BRISTOL
2 Thomas Street, BS2, BRISTOL
3 Thomas Street, BS5, BRISTOL

Best wishes :)

Cell,

I notice from your profile, that you are in Australia, so for your information (and for anybody, whose english geography is shaky):

There is a county of Gloucester or Gloucestershire in England, but there is also a city of Gloucester in Gloucestershire, presumably the county-town.

This can happen for other counties,
i.e.
Leicester, Leicestershire
Cambridge, Cambridgeshire,
etc.

but be aware, for most counties the county-town is not also the name of the county

I am making an assumption here, that you didn't know this.
Hope this helps  :)

If it helps the address on the census 1881 is Bristol Temple, Gloucester. Thanks for trying.

Hi, I don't know if you've seen them below in the Bristol lost pub web site

But I have just found this:

Ring of Bells in Thomas street (listed under Temple/Redcliff)

http://bristolslostpubs.com/html/page16.htm

A William Nippers is listed as being  landlord of the above  from 1871 to 1882

Maybe the pub is not there anymore (?).  Perhaps someone who lives in that area may be able to tell you what is there today in Thomas st.
  Good luck :)

My thanks to Cell and Graceland-a great help much appreciated. It doesn't look as though it's worth calling in at the Ring of Bells for a drink !!
