Family Historian help
« on: Monday 11 May 09 11:28 BST (UK) »
Hi,
This is probably a silly question but I'm not very good with computer programs!
I want to send a copy of my research on one branch of my family to rellies in Canada but I can't seem to fathom out how to go about it.
I was hoping to put it on a CD but can I put a diagram of the tree on one as it only seems to include reports, and mangles them! I know FH v4 has just come out and wonder if its any easier.
Hoping someone can help.

Tempsford.

Hi Tempsford  :)

If your relatives have a program which reads Gedcom files, then thre's no problem. Just save your tree in FH as usual but with a different name. Put this on a CD and send.

All FH files are in the standard Gedcom format and any family tree program should be able to read it.

If you want to send just a part of your tree,  you have to make a copy of the whole tree (as another filename) and then delete the people that you don't want from that. This is more tricky.

Regards

Hi again

Here's a thread that discusses splitting a tree in FH:

Hi Gadget,
Thanks for your help.
I'm not sure if they have a Gedcom programme but fingers crossed!

If they don't, they could always download a free trial version or even PAF from the LDS site:

Many thanks for all your help and suggestions.
Much appreciated.

Hi, Tempsford,

If you just want the diagram to send to your rellies, FH V4 lets you save them to PDF, so once you've removed all the bits you don't want, PDF it. You can include just about anything in the diagram boxes for each person as well. You could also pdf the reports as well with more info.

Hi Simon,
Thanks, that sounds great.
Did you have any problems upgrading as I see there has been a few teething problems.

I'd totally forgotten about the Upgrade, although I mentioned it on a thread a while ago.  I've now purchased the upgrade CD for £20 so will report back if  I find any probs. There weren't any when it went from FH2 to FH3 though  :)
