Cox family New Windsor, Berkshire
« on: Thursday 14 May 09 19:56 BST (UK) »
Can anyone also tell me Richard Cox's first wifes name. I have found 3 of the wifes but not the first one.
Richard was  born c1810 in Stoke, Buckinghamshire, but lived and worked in Peascod Street, New Windsor as a butcher all his married lives.
His first married must have preceded 1831 or around that date... any help would be very gratefully received. Thanks

The only Richard Cox in 1851 in  Peascod Street is a 16 year old born Eton working as a porter for a Thomas Agar a pork butcher at number 6.

Hi again,
I am doing some guessing here. Are you saying that Richard Cox married another woman called Harriet before 1838?

I found the 16 year old Richard's baptism on the IGI and he seems to be a Richard and Harriet's son, along with a William 1837 and a Sophia 1831. Another IGI ref and a FreeBMD marriage gives Harriet's maiden name as Greenaway married 1838 in the Abingdon Reg Dist. Dec Quarter
Abingdon Dec 1838  6 246    Cox  Richard /Greenaway  Harriet

Are you saying that you have proof that this is the same Richard Cox, and  he was a widow in 1838  so there was an earlier marriage?  If so, looking for a death/burial of the first Harriett might be productive, at least in establishing her age.

Sorry im not very clear am l  ???

I suspect that his first wife had William 1837 and a Sophia 1831 as the marriage to Harriett Greenaway was in 1838. I don't know for sure if he was married before but according to IGI these two were born before he married Harriett. Hence my thinking that he was married previously. (if so he  married 4 times). Must have been all the fresh meat as he was a butcher) lol

Are you saying that William and Sophie had Harriett Greenaway as their mother?
Thanks for taking the time to help. best regards

Hi,
What I am saying is that there are 3 baptisms in Eton on the IGI for a Richard and Harriet. 1831 Sophia, 1835 Richard, 1837 William. These are too early to be children of Richard and Harriet nee Greenaway. His 1838 marriage cert will tell you if he was a widow when he married her, if you haven't already got it. As he seems to have travelled about a bit - Stoke to Abingdon area to Eton to Windsor - and the surname Cox is common, you have your work cut out. If you haven't already done it the 1841 might be helpful in seeing if he had any of the children from Eton with him at that time.
Otherwise it is a case of trawling first through the marriages pre 1831 in the Eton area parishes and then widening your search. Hard work!

Yours

1841 he was married to Harriet and had Sophie Richard and young Harriet b1840/1. Yes its a puzzle, thanks very much for your time and effort. I cant find the birth/baptisims for Sophie Richard and William on the IGI.. will keep looking.
