JOSEPH HARDIMAN JAMES, 23rd regiment

Im looking for information for a JOSEPH HARDIMAN JAMES
According to his sons marriage certificate he was deceased by 1896.
He was a Colour Sergeant in the 23rd Regiment.
His son JOSEPH JAMES was born in breconshire in 1872, and later married Hannah
Parry in 1896.

Any help would be appreciated,

Cannot see Joseph  Hardiman James in Breconshire in 1861 or 1871.
