The only Alfred Langley with father James and mother Sarah that I can find on the 1861 English census is a family in Yorkshire.

A search of Alf* Langl* with father James brings just 3 results.

Another result has mother Elizabeth  and that family is in Surrey

There is one for Essex , but the mother is Eliza.

A search of Alf* Langl* with father James in 1871 brings just 1 result.

It's a James Langley with wife Ann and Alfred was only 4 years old. They're in Somerset.

That's obviously not the one.

Same search for 1851 brings just two results....

The James and Eliza with son Alfred born Colchester, ESSEX about 1849.

And a James and wife Ann with son Alfred born about 1848 Limehouse, Middlesex.

Had a look at assisted/ unassisted and convict and there is no Alfred or James Langley that match.  Am I just having a boy look?

Not necessarily, Dave......arrivals can be very difficult to find. 


I've done lots more Census searches, and the only likely Alfred Langley from Essex is the one with mother Eliza.

There are very few Alfred Langley's at all for the whole of England in the time period we are looking at.

Dave, the marriage certificate of Alfred Langley and Maria Cronin could really help you with this family. It should give the names of their parents and possibly their birth place. And marriage certificates have information on them given by the actual couple themselves......not a third party........
