Ellen & Joseph BARRY, b. Devonport circa 1862 "COMPLETED"
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 11:17 BST (UK) »
I am trying to establish the occupation of the father (James) of Ellen and Joseph (above).  He was born in Dublin and must have moved to Devonport between 1857 and 1865 as he had children born in Dublin during both these years.  He is listed in the 1901 Dublin census as a shipwright, so I am wondering if he might have been serving in the Royal Navy.  Any leads or info would be appreciated.

This looks like a possible family in 1871, though there is no Joseph.

Sorry, I just re-read and noticed the father's name is James. Are you sure of that?

Hi Jen,
Thanks for the quick reply.  I can confirm that the fathers name was James and the mother Elizabeth. They were born in Dublin in 1826 and 1831 respectively.  I have this info from the 1901 and 1911 Dublin census'. Other childrens names are Mary (b. 1850), William (b.1853) and Edward (b. 1855).

Hello again,

Do you know when they went back to Dublin? I have been searching 1871 and 1881 England but if they were only briefly in Devonport, that's a bit pointless. I can only see one birth for an Ellen Barry in the area at the right sort of time (it was 1864) and that is probably the child I found with parents John and Elizabeth in 1871.

143 York Street
Stoke Damarel, Devon

James BARRY, head, mar, 31, shipwright, born Dublin Ireland

Willm, son, unm, 6, Dublin
Edward,son, unm, 5, Dublin
Elizth, daug, unm, 3, Dublin

If they were only in area a few years this would probably be the only census they appear on.

Well done Trish. That looks like the right family. Do you think Ellen and Eleanor are the same person.  I can't see any sign of her birth registration on FreeBMD - I'll check elsewhere but it might be that if they were only here for a while, they didn't bother to register her at all.

Hi RoryT :),

I cant find a birth for Eleanor (Ellen?) nearest is a Emma Jane
June 1859, Stoke Dameral.
Also image could say 16mths for her after relooking at it.

Probably Josephs birth;
Joseph Edward W
June 1868
Plymouth
