Society of Friends records look up
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 11:23 BST (UK) »
The Quaker records 1622 - onwards are held at the Scotland's People Centre in Edinburgh.  Is aayone going there and could look them up for me?

I'm looking for a birth of Walter Davidson about 1700 in Aberdeenshire - possibly Kennethmont or Insch - and a marriage for him around 1734/35.  His eldest daughter Elizabeth was christened 29 Nov 1735.  No name of wife/mother is recorded.  He farmed New Glanderstone, Kennethmont from about 1735 until his death around 1768.  He second married Elizabeth Clerk on 12 Nov 1758.

We believe he was a Quaker and that is why we can find no record of his birth or marriage in the Old Parish registers online or on the IGI.

thanks

Hi, I know nothing about the Quaker's records but just wanted to point out that the Old Parish Records are incomplete, & the event may not have been recorded in any case. Am I right in assuming that his daughter's christening & his second marriage were recorded in the Quaker Records?

The family understanding is that the 2nd wife was not Quaker so Walter would have had to leave the Society for ever on marriage to her.  However that would have been noted in the records of meetings ... if only we could find them!  The only meeting place we know of is at Kinbuck, near Inverurie, which is rather a trek from Insch but maybe feasible.

All the 2nd family are recorded in the church parish records.  Ah, if they are incomplete, I will wait and see if anything turns up but we have looked through the parish records in Insch and Kennethmont without success.

Thanks for your response.
