Was there a convent in St Albans?
« on: Friday 22 May 09 23:08 BST (UK) »

Was there a convent in St Albans in the 1880's?
Would anyone know if there was a fire there and people killed?
Where would I find records for the convent.

Thank you
Carol

Hi Carol

I found this but probably not what you are really looking for , this is the only mention of a fire at St.Albans that i could find http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_St_Albans

Hi Carol,

There was and still is a convent in St.Albans, although it is now a convent and residential home - Maryland Convent & Residential Home, Townsend Drive, St.Albans.     There was also a big fire in St.Albans on 27th August 1882 but I have yet to establish if  these two items are connected in any way.

Regards   ...   Peter

Hello Chelle and Peter

Thank you both for your replies regarding a convent in St Albans.
The only information I have is from a distant relative in USA who says she has a wooden cross with the name Violet (in ink/paint?) and a date of March 13th 1883 on it. She is of the opinion that this Violet is a relative and the date is the date Violet took her vows. Violet died in a fire in St Albans and thinks possibly at the convent in St Albans.
I don't know if this is fact or fiction, neither does she, but this story has been handed down from her mother who was born in St Albans.
Thank you

Carol
