Richard and Hannah Gibson of Lincoln
« on: Saturday 23 May 09 16:05 BST (UK) »
Hallo,
I am researching into the Gibson family of Lincoln.
The parents were Richard and Hannah.  Their child was Elizabeth (c.1794-1957).  Other children were probably, Richard, Hannah (Ann) and Mary.
They were all baptised at St. Swithin, Lincoln but later moved to Hull which is where Elizabeth and her possible siblings married.
We are 99% certain that Elizabeth was Catholic but whether it was through her mother or both parents is not known.
A deceased great aunt of mine who was infallible in her family knowledge, said that the ‘family’ were recusants but of course I wasn’t old enough to ask which family and so that information is now lost.
I guess it isn’t much in the way of info to work on but can anyone assist?
I hope I can track my Gibsons down and add them to their proper place in the tree and I am particularly interested in researching my Catholic heritage.
Hannah Gibson the mother could have been née Phillips as per the IGI but that is only a supposition.
Thank you
Kirk

Hi again,

Having sorted out the Hall family in Hull can I help with the Gibson's? What do you know about them in Hull?

Tom

Hi Tom,
Yes you can help - if you are able to.
Apart from the information I put in my first message all I know is that they lived in Sculcoates and I have this marriage which is correct:
John Hall married to Elizabeth Gibson at Christ Church Sculcoates, 4th of June 1827.
and these possibly linked marriages at the same church:
Richard Gibson married Sarah Wilkinson 23 August 1824
This one could be mine but these next two are too vague for me to be sure:
Hannah Gibson married Peter Neary 9 April 1820
Mary Gibson married George Beadling 30 October 1823

I know that Elizabeth Hall died 13 December 1857 at 6 Short Street but I do not know when John died.  I do know he was a bootcloser though and was alive in 1861 but dead in 1871.
This is all Yorkshire of course but I shall leave it posted here and copy it into the Yorkshire section as well.
Cheers
Kirk

Well John Hall was alive and living in Short Street in 1863, as according to Hull Packet on Friday July 31st

 A warning to Coal Dealers:

On Saturday morning, at the Hull Police Court, Mr. Todd, clerk to the Local Board of Health, applied to the stipendiary magistrates for an order to destroy five coal bags which had been seized by Mr. Whitfield, one of the inspectors of the board, as being improper bags for use, the bye-laws requiring that coal bags shall be of a certain size and marked. Mr. Whitfield here produced the bags, which were certainly unworthy of the name, for they were so much worse for wear and tear that large pieces of coal would easily slip through them besides their other deficiencies-Mr. Travis said it was scandalous that such bags should be used; who could the owner be? Mr. Whitfield said the owner was a Mr. John Hall, of Short Street. He (Mr. Whitfield) seized the bags in Garden Street-An order was then made for them to be destroyed.

You might also consider the Burial records available:

Also have you tried East Yorkshire Family History Society:

Thanks Tom for that information.  That narrows the years down a little.
I am going to take a look at those sites.
