Hi,
Have you found Felix's baptism? The IGI has a baptism for Felix Hawly, son of John Hawly & Frances Hulme on
3 Oct 1819  (noted as born 9 Sept 1819) at Bethesda Chapel Albion Street-Methodist New Connexshe, Shelton. Shelton is near enough Longton & Fenton to be a possible location. The IGI has several Hawley (only Felix has no "e") baptisms at this chapel between 1816 & 1833.

If John was baptised in the Church of England in the area this would have been Lane End at the time:

Some records are on the IGI, but not for the date you're suggesting. You may find the "Hugh Wallis" listings & search of the IGI helpful

Finally, if you're able to visit either Stoke or Stafford, the archives have some relevant registers on film/fiche - or you can order through a local LDS Family History Centre

Thank you all so much, for pointing me in the right direction, I have managed to track the family back through the census to 1841 and that was how I'd calculated Johns birth year, I'm still a little confused over the place names, never having been to Stoke.. are Fenton, Longton, Shelton, Blythe bridge all villages or are they just areas within a town?  I've tried looking at old maps but it's all a bit confusing.
thanx

Hi again,
Here's a link to a 1775 map of the area
http://www.thepotteries.org/photos/map1775.htm
If you follow the large road (Meer Lane) that runs almost into the bottom right corner it goes past Land End & Longton then Fenton. Shelton is a bit to the north, under Handley Green roughly in line with Newcastle.

This is a link to Streetmap, centred on Shelton, for the modern version
http://www.rootschat.com/links/06ew/
As you will see it's all more or less "joined up" now into one urban area.
