Variants of Frances
« on: Wednesday 23 February 05 21:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone & glad we're all here.

I trying to trace a Scottish relation named Frances George Carr without success.

Born in July 1857 in Fodderty, Ross & Cromarty, I was given the intriguing bit of info that she lived in Glasgow and had a daughter.

I can't find her as Frances Carr in either of the 1881, 1891 or 1901 census's so  a marriage would probably help, and in the long run may help to solve other mysteries.

To help with my searches, I was wondering what the variations of Frances might be.

I hope the list won't be too long.

(And this is a Scottish Bulletin board thats never heard of Cromarty)

Hi Bob

I don't know about Scotland but in England it's Fanny for Frances and Frank for Francis.

Good luck

The Frances I know best is known as Fay.

Incidentally, Frances is the usual female spelling with Francis being  the usual male spelling.  And perhaps the middle name George might have been a family surname?

Judy
PS: Incidentally, there certainly is a board for Ross & Cromarty!

Hi JudyP, NigelG, etc

The last point first, I know there is a Ross & Cromarty board, I posted one of the massive 10 posts, I was making a light hearted complaint that the spell checker hasn't heard of Cromarty, to cheer myself up.

There's no sign of George as a family name, her mother being Ann Chisholm. Of the 6 children, 3 have middle names as in  James Alexander Carr, Keith William Carr, and Frances George Carr.

Thanks for the alternate name suggestions which I'll be trying.

Hi Bob,

I did wonder where you were coming from with your Cromarty comment - given that, as I saw, you'd posted on that board.  Now I know!

Good luck with Frances and variants!

Judy
PS: Perhaps you'll also have to try KERR?!

JudyP,

I know where you're coming from with KERR, particularly on the LDS, (My Gt Grandmother was really Agnes Blaikie, but on the LDS was BLACKIE, and this permeated through to the record of her death, although her mothers death was recorded as BLAIKIE), but all records so far have followed the CARR spelling OK.

These have been in the LDS, and in the 1881 census her brother James Alexander  is correctly listed. But having said that, he disappears after that.

It seems odd to ask but, are CARR and KERR pronounced the same or similarly in Scotland?

Hi JudyP,

I never thought to check your profile, so what are you doing up at this time of the morning.

I've just been doing some searches on Scotlands People in the 1881 census when Frances would have been about 24.

I searched for FR* KERR,  got a Frances E Kerr 25, daughter of a Justice of the Peace in Edinburgh.
I searched for FA* CARR, found 1 Fanny Carr aged 20 - too young in Lanark.
I searched for FA* KERR, found 1 Fanny Kerr aged 21 living in Edinburgh.
I searched for AN* CARR, found 4 Ann's or Anne's, 1 Annie aged 23, birthplace Shotts.
I searched for AN* KERR, and found 26 which I'll leave to another day.

She was probably married by then, so I'll go and do some similar searches in marriages.
