1871 census help, x
« on: Wednesday 03 June 09 12:52 BST (UK) »
hi there, x

ok, im looking at this census and im interested in Matilda, registered as a visitor aged 1yrs old, now i cant see if the surname is McCloud? McClean? or something else,
also there is the head, James McCartney and his wife Elizabeth,
then a Julie Toppings lodger, on the next page but in the same household is
Mary Howard lodger, married and her children are down as being related (son/daugh) to the head of the house, can this be right or a mistake,

any thoughts on this please, cheers, kaz, xxxx

Hi Kaz,

Could Matilda be McLeod?

Sometimes enumerators didn't strictly follow the rules and relationships shown are to the previous person rather than the head of household, whih seems to be the case here.

ohhhhhhh, i see what you mean,
so all the Howards are 1 family and not related to the head, and Matilda is a visitor at 1yrs old, not related to anyone? she is born the same place as Elizabeth, i cant find matilda in the 81 census but in 91/01  she is in toxteth workhouse as inmate pauper,
and she died in 1910, cant find a birth for her, what a sad life
