**COMPLETED** census help please
« on: Thursday 11 June 09 15:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm still trying to trace Mary WOOD/S before her marriage in 1880, she seems to be as elusive as her husband - neither of them want to be found on earlier censuses  :-\

Can anyone find MARY WOODS b1861 on 1871 census please - I have had no luck at all father William deceased by 1880 occ mariner  :-\

Any help very much appreciated  :)

John Nicholas & S H J ?hman looks like Ashman - just initials for christian name

SHJ could be Sidney/Sydney H J Ashman b1868 Glamorgan

Any help gratefully received  :)

Hi

Sorry for not getting  back to you sooner.  As William is a mariner, chances are he would be at sea often, and therefore would not be on a census.

I think I’ve cracked it for you. Wouldn't unduly worry about the Wood/Woods

1871 Wales census  *8 Kingtons Court, St Mary, Cardiff

RG10; Piece: 5360; Folio: 8; Page: 10;

Elizabeth Wood  Head 43 WIDOW Seamstress born   Bridgewater, Somerset
Charles A Son Un 19 Timber Labourer born   Bridgewater, Somerset
Henry Son 13 scholar born Bridgewater, Somerset
MARY A dau 10 Born Cardiff, Glam

1861  Scott Street, St Mary, Cardiff

 RG9; Piece: 4033; Folio: 25; Page: 44;

Elizabeth Wood Head MARRIED 33 born Bridgewater, Somerset
Ellen dau 13 scholar born Bridgewater, Somerset
William son 10 scholar born Bridgewater, Somerset
Charles son 8 born Bridgewater, Somerset
John son 6 born Bridgewater, Somerset
Henry son 3 born Bridgewater, Somerset
MARY A dau 1 month born Cardiff, Glam

1851  Honeysuckle Alley??, Bridgewater, Somerset

HO107; Piece: 1925; Folio: 89; Page: 48;

Elizabeth Wood WIFE (Head)  Mar 23 MARINERS WIFE born Bridgewater,
Ellen dau 3 born Bridgewater, Somerset
William son 1 born Bridgewater, Somerset

William Wood married Elizabeth  1844 4th quarter
Reg dist Bridgewater  Vol  10 Pg 500

This is where I’m stuck - THREE Elizabeth’s on page  Elizabeth Fish, Elizabeth Pitman, Elizabeth Shield.  Sorry no way I can tell which one he married.

BUT  I did find these – perhaps you could order a birth cert?

Ellen Wood born 3rd quarter Reg Bridgewater Vol 10 pg 290
William born  2nd quarter Reg Bridgwater  Vol 10 339

I have also found this website link to a Somerset site that will do look ups for you, but knowing the great people on this site, you could try putting the marriage details on the Somerset board and seeing if anyone can find out the information for you.

Have to go now, will have a look for 1891

Looks good to me  ;D

Wow, Wow, Wow I've waited so long, never thought she'd be located.

Thank you Joan, this means a great deal, can't say thank you enough  :)

This looks extremely likely to be Mary Woods - I'm going to take a longer look at all this tomorrow

I thought she died after 1891 as on 1901 it's Mary J Smith but J & M married 31 yrs  :-\

Guess she was away from home on day of 1891 census

Thanks again - appreciate your time

Hi Joan,

Thanks for Somerset link. Swansea is quite some way from Cardiff - if this is Mary I suppose she could have been visiting relatives in Swansea although I haven't come across any  :-\

Delighted with progress though too much to ask that Mary was visiting her family (WOODS) on that census day!!

I'm now wondering if I'll be able to find William Woods - mariner as from the censuses & marriage index you have sent it looks more than likely he was born in Somerset. I suppose although I don't have a birth date I could work around wife Elizabeth's age.

Hi Joan

As I haven't been able to find a birth record for  Mary WOODS b1855 Cardiff, Glamorgan or find her on 1861/71 census and you have found Mary A WOOD on 1861 & 1871 census in Cardiff Glamorgan with a link to a father named William WOOD.

I'm wondering if she did have the middle name of Ann and she choose not to use ANN on her marriage certificate or any of the other later censuses  :-\

Two entries on BMD for birth of Mary ANN Wood
Cardiff Sep qtr1856 age link with marriage 1880 &
Cardiff Jun qtr. 1861 this links with 1861, 71 & 1911 census.
