looking for info
« on: Thursday 11 June 09 20:30 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find information for a friend of mine about his grandfather, info very limited, and I have searched loads of irish sites, to no avail. His name is Ernest Shergold Merritt, born c1874 Westport Co Mayo, was married to Isalella or Isabella Hutchinson in ?? Had 2 daughters Louise XXXX and Doreen XXXX we believe both in Ireland.
He was in the Inniskillen Fusiliers, Private 29106, Got gassed at either Pashendale or Somme and died in a British army Hospital in Dublin in??, we figure he was about 35-40 when he joined up for WW1.any info would be gratefully appreciated.

Hello,

have you tried Family Search Pilot site re Irish records?

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch

His marriage reference is there for 1906 so you could then apply for the certificate. The spouse isn't named and Isabella Hutchinson doesn't come up in a search for a marriage of similar date.

best wishes

Hi
My father was Josiah H Shergold Merritt, born in Westport, Co Mayo and son of Herbert Merritt, listed below.   We must be linked somewhere as he had Shergold as a middle name.  My brother is still based in Co Mayo and researching the family tree,  let me know if you have found any further info we coudl share.

Wallasey,
Using the Record Search site on www.familysearch.org I found the marriage of Ernest Shergold Merritt to Isabella Hutchinson in Tulla Registration District (Co. Clare) in the Apr-Jun quarter of 1906 in Vol 4 Page 241. His death does not seem to be registered on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site.

There is a possible death for an Ernest Merritt in civil registrations and if this is the correct one he died in 1921, too late to be included in Commonweath War Graves lists. (age is close and death registred in Dublin area)
Ernest MERRITT (age 44) death Jan./Mar.1921 Dublin South registration district volume 2 page 537.

Here's Ernest and family in 1911 census in case you haven't seen that information yet-
