« on: Thursday 11 June 09 22:56 BST (UK) »
I seem to be a bit confused when it comes to Parish records.....

I give for a example Henry Simmonds Born in 1807 Chatham, Kent, England, how do i figure out what Parish to look in ? for some clue on who his parents are.

Thank you

Hi there and welcome to rootschat,

There is a website called genuki which specialises in information on places - this will take you to the list of towns and parishes in Kent

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~malcolm/genuki/big/eng/KEN/parishes.html#C

That link then goes to

http://www.nwkfhs.org.uk/chat_plc.htm

From that it appears that the Church of St. Mary would be the only one in use in 1807.  This is assuming that they were Church of England, of course.

Hi THEQ

Welcome from me also  :)

If you look at the Rootschat Kent board, there are some very useful links
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,46779.0.html

For Chatham and other Kent parishes, you could have a look at the Cityark website, they have some parish records online
http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

Kind regards

Thank you for all the suggestions, this place ROCKZ !!!

I have just a couple more questions to ask.

If I look at the record for Thomas Cleaver, it reads that he was born Loughborough, Leicestershire, England
Also it gives the Cambridge St Andrew The Less as the Civil Parish, am I safe to assume that I should be looking in the St Andrew The Less Parish records or start looking at churches in Leicestershire for parish records for baptisms.

Thank again, I hope I have explained this well enough that someone might be able to understand what I'm asking.

 :o :o

I'm going to remove that screen-shot before the Copyright team sees it.  You should not post such stuff here: Ancestry own the copyright to the layout etc.

But I'll explain what it means in the next post.

Ok - transcription of the essentials of the screen shot as follows:

Name - Thomas Cleaver
Age 33
Estimated Birth Year 33
Relation Head
Spouse's name Ann
Gender Male
Where born Loughborough Leicestershire
Civil Parish - Cambridge St Andrew the Less
Ecclesiastical parish - Christ Church
County Cambridgeshire

Registration district Cambridge
Sub district St Andrew

So from this I deduce we are looking at the 1851 census.

Thomas Cleaver is the head of the household and he is 33 years old (birth date approximately 1833).
He is married to Ann.  They live in Cambridge, in the parish of St Andrew the Less.  He was born in Loughborough.

You need to look for his baptism in Loughborough.  His children may well be born in Cambridge: it would depend on how long he had been living there.  Have you checked the actual image to find out where his wife was born and how many children they may have had?

Have you read some of the topics on the Beginners board?  And also looked in our Reference Library?

Perhaps the following may help?

But if you get stuck, please keep asking: RootsChatters love to help  :)

HI THEQ, welcome to RC.

I live in L'boro and if you have the ref for the birth you mention I can look it up. although there are a lot of villages around L'boro the early births, marriages, deaths are all indexed / collected together under L'boro.

L'boro has an excellent family history section to the library and contains many records incl all the village records.

Diddy.

just seen last message - may be able to find him from approx year. will be in library this week.

hi THEQ, no problem with lookups.

Can I just confirm Thomas Cleavers birth date, as above you have it as 1833 and in your PM you have put 1818?

BTW its not him - I'm female!!!  ;D
