Welcome to Rootschat, enzfan. Is this the Murthly in Perthshire, Scotlnd? If so I'll move this thread to the Perthshire board where there'll probably be lots of people able to find you information and make suggestions.

1861 they are in Blairgowie, James is a toll keeper and with them several other children;
John  is now 10
James 9
Rebecca 7
William 5
Jean Ann 3
Charlotte, 4mths

Is this the family you are looking for? Who are you descended from to confirm?

Did they emigrate as finding it hard to see them after 1861 census.

Cheers,
Trish

Looks like this is them :)
The IGI at   www.familysearch.org has this info on the marriage;

James GRANT
Rebecca MOODIE
1 September 1850
Redgorton,Perth,Scotland

As Redgorton is where son John aged 4mths is born, it is pretty conclusive I would say.

Hi

Yes this is absolutely the family I'm after.

I need to find out if this is my family. I descend from a John Grant, son of James and Rebecca. Our family history informs us that John came out to NZ - he had certainly arrived by 1876. Other than that we know nothing. The dates and places I have certainly match with what we know

In my search I came across this family and also cannot find them beyond the 1861 census. A 10 year old posting on a forum suggests that they all came out to NZ in 1864 and that James Grant died in 1866. I am currently searching passenger lists, so far without luck and there is a James Grant 1866 death listed on our NZ Historical BMD website which I've yet to investigate

All seems very odd to me. Absolutely wonderful to find someone else in the world who maybe seeking the same family. What is the connection?

Hi Enzfan,

I have no connection to the Grant family. The purpose of Rootschat is to help others ;D

I will see if I can find anything else.
I am originally from N.Z. and know what wonderful info some of their BMD certs contain. Purchasing the death cert. should give you time in Nz that he has lived and that would help with tracking when they arrived. Same with childrens marriage certs.

Cheers,
Trish
