Goddard / Bevill Marriage about 1810
« on: Sunday 14 June 09 08:38 BST (UK) »
Im looking for a marriage between Samuel Goddard and Elizabeth Bevill. They had a child born in 1815 in Guernsey and Samuel was a captain in the army possibly at Hythe barracks. Elizabeth was a daughter of Solomon Bevill comptroller of customs in Hastings. Elizabeth was dead by 1843 when her fathers will was read.
Thanks

7 May 1802 at Hythe there is a marriage of Elizabeth Fox, of Hastings St Clements parish, widow, to Samuel Goddard and one of the bondsmen is Samuel Bevill.   The groom is also a widower and quartermaster of the 1st regt Dragoons Hythe.  The licence also shows another bondsman Willis CML 1781/1809.  Not sure what the latter means

Thank you for that. I saw that info but was concerned that they would wait 13 yrs before having children and then have two within three years unless they had other children over the years I couldnt trace and were both widowed early. I'll follow it up.
Thanks

It does seem odd.   If Elizabeth Bevill was first married in 1791, assuming she was 20 or so then having children in 1815 she was getting on a bit.  She does seem to have had bad luck with her husbands.  "To lose two sounds like carelessness"!

Thank you Kerry. I didnt expect two marriages before Samuel. The children were born in Guernsey which threw me out a bit. I'll follow it up.
Thanks

Samuel's first marriage is in Maresfield 24 Nov 1772 Samuel Goddard bach Cpl in Capt Goldsworthy's troup 1st regt Dragoons commanded by Lord Pembroke, age 30 up to Elizabeth Brooks of Maresfield age 34 up.  Again this makes him quite an elderly Dad.

Interesting that the IGI has a marriage in Hastings in 1720 for SG to Mary Brooks - an earlier generation and then cousins marrying later perhaps?   Just a thought.
