Phil,

I suspect this is your man. There is no Absolom Candy born, married (to 1937) or had children (to 1928) or is listed as relative at any burial (to 1972) in SA

Kris  :)

I had always suspected that he 'went bush' as one of his brothers - Alfred - moved to Darwin in the 1870s and died on the NT Goldfields some years later under the mysterious sobriquet of 'Bob the Stranger.'

There is another brother who also went missing - George. Is there any sign of him in South Australia? He was born in Warrnambool in 1853, and after a short career as a juvenile delinquent with frequent appearances in the Warrnambook Magsitrate's Court, he also disappeared.

Any thoughts?

Phil

Could be your George....ages of inmates of institutions were often inaccurate.  Ararat Hospital was also known as Ararat Asylum - more correctly named Aradale Asylum.

CANDY George
Parents unknown  38 years  Ararat Hospital  1900  Reg#4170

A link to the history

http://www.aghs.com.au/aradaleasylum.html

A reasonable history but Ghost Hunter's Society is not one I would have much faith in however ::) ::)  I'll see if I can find another link.

Annie that looks like the present day Ararat District Hospital.  Asylum is not in the town and I note the parking signs etc.  Visited the asylum in the 1950's - a step gt aunt had been admitted there with depression :'( :'(  Sad tale but had a happy ending.  Just remember a big white building but have driven passed it many times on the way to Melbourne.....high on a rise outside the town.

I made the comment about place of death as it often appears on the Vic death records that people died at Kew Hospital, Parkville Hospital, Sunbury Hospital and Ararat Hospital and they were all institutions not hospitals as such.

Of course George may well have died in the hospital not Aradale.  Would need to see the death cert.  This is the only George CANDY death that is pre 1903 [date of mother's death] that comes anywhere near matching Geo b. 1853.  Hopefully seeing there are no parents' names, there may be a place of birth.

Many thanks to everyone.

I had previously found Ann's Death Certificate, and it was that which I was using to track down what became of the various family members.  I had forgotten about Reuben, but he also disappeared and, like Absolem, had a reasonably unusual name.

I will definitely follow up the George CANDY who died at Ararat. Years ago I had occasion to follow up another relative who died in Beechworth Asylum, and the records (which are in the Public Record Office of Victoria) make fascinating, if slightly depressing reading.

I think the photo of the Ararat Hopital isn't the right building.  I used to live in Ballarat, and there was talk about someone buying Aradale Asylum and turning it into a country club. Unfortunately it was in an advanced state of dereliction at that time.

Here is a picture of it.

Kind regards and many thanks again.

Phil

There are some CANDY mi's around Horsham, Towerhill, Mortlake.

There is a George , son of Alfred John and Mary Louisa.

Sue

I'd certainly be interested in these MIs if you can pass them on.

As far as I know, the Horsham Family is quite separate from the one at TowerHill and Koroit, which traces its origins back to Warrnambool.

The Mortlake is a different family again - a John CANDY from Tasmania and later from Geelong died in Mortlake, but as he was alone and unmarried, and he died in the local Police lockup, I'd be surprised if there is an MI.

Can you help?

Kind regards

Philip Candy
