Location, Any Idea?
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 16:02 BST (UK) »
Just been given this, my Uncle is the smiler, 3rd from right front row. I figure this must have been taken during training as none of them have their  wings, though they are not wearing the caps with white flashes.
I reckon it was taken sometime in 1942.

Hi Welwyn,
the location of your photo is a Bombing & Gunnery School in Canada (there were 11 of them).
The aeroplane at the rear is a Fairey Battle Trainer - and a rather unusual one that has been configured with a cut down fuselage glasshouse and fitted with a Bristol turret for gunnery duties.
1942 is quite reasonable.
Hope this helps.

You`re a superstar Flakdodger!!

With the aid of my Uncles service records l can definitely say that it was

No.9 Bombing & Gunnery School, Mont-Joli Quebec.

Someone must have said something to make them laugh/smile.

I wonder if the erstwhile Scrimnet would kindly move this to the photo restoration board so it can be improved? Pretty please.
(Dont seem to be able to post the same photo twice)?

Many thanks.......Steve.

Steve,
if you do have the photo coloured, the aeroplane is chrome yellow, black anti-dazzle panel in front of the cockpit, red fuselage band, white 29.
Cheers

Hi Pete, l did wonder that and a few do look possible matches, wonder how many of these went onto the same No.34 OTU as my Uncle? My original is a bit sharper than my daughter has scanned it.

Thanks for the colours Flakdodger, l will endeavour to get it posted on the other board for a bit of TLC.

Regards.....Steve.

Just to fine tune the info a bit more, my Uncle John was at The No.9 Gunnery school from the beginning of November 42 and went onto the OTU at Pennfield Ridge in early March 43, so photo could be 43.

Pete,
thank you, most kind.
I must hunt through my book collection (currently boxed) to see if I can find a better fix on that Battle, and therefore a better fix on a photo date.
Cheers
Dave
