1901 census lookup help please
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 16:12 BST (UK) »
I am looking for maurice and johanna donovan in the 1901 census.

Maurice was born in 1867 in chatham, kent,

His parents were maurice and hanorah donovan, nee kelly, from cork in ireland.

He married johannah welsh  in 1890 in wales.

I cant find him on the 1871 census.

He is in the 1881 census living with his parents in Ebbw vale, monmouthshire.

He is also in the 1891 census living in pontlottyn with johanna and her two children from a previous marriage james and mary welsh.

Also on the same subject i was wondering if anyone could help me work this out,

On the censuses  it says that maurice was born in chatham, kent in 1867,but in 1870 his parents were in ireland,
so is it possible that his parents went to england from ireland and then moved back to ireland and then came to wales?

Its quite complicated but if anyone has any suggestions that would be great thanks.

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat - I'm sure someone will be able to help you there are so many helpful and knowledgeable people on here.

I can't see him on the census yet but just a thought re POB. On the 1891 census his birthplace is given as Barrisks Chatham. Barrisks as a place doesn't appear as far as I can see on any search and I wonder if it should  be the barracks in Chatham ie his father was connected in some way with the navy or army?

Thanks for replying

Yes i saw that too,i thought that it might mean barracks as in the army/navy aswell.

I even looked to see if there was a place called barrisks!

I did some searching and i found a maurice donovan, that was his fathers name aswell, from cork on the 1861 census listed as being in the navy.

I dont know if that was his father,i couldnt find any more information.

That could fit as there is a big naval dockyard at Chatham   ::)
