Mole of Genoa is part of a Harbour there?
So looks like it could be translated as  ?  "(name of a Harbour town) , Mole of Genoa"

Cheers

Hi

I did toy with the idea of the town named Pomaretto,  but it's in in Torino, Piemont and a ways futher inland from Genoa. and I would have though, if one was trying to 'explain' the location of Pomaretto on a Census by writing the name of a more 'well known' town/area  nearby,  one would write Torino and not Genoa.......

On seeing the references to the "Mole of Genoa" and understanding the British Royal Navy connections to it (Horatio Nelson being one!)  I have to say, I might imagine the mystery word is the name of a ship on which his father was serving RN, and which was on/in  the Mole of Genoa at the time.

I wonder if it is worth posting this message on the Armed Services board (if that's the right one) to see if there might be a way of establishing ships RN ships which may have been in Genoa regions circa 1861?

Cheers

(Mole of genoa) "It is situated at the head of the Gulf of Genoa,
and at the centre of an amphitheatre of high hills,
which rise quite abruptly from the sea. On either
hand the mountainous coast stretches away in a vast
semi-circle beyond the range of vision. The snow
capped Apennines tower behind and around it,
making a noble background to the beautiful picture.
The city itself rises on the steep hills, whose tops
for seven miles are lined with forts, so that from
the sea almost every street can be seen, and the
tall houses and palaces mount one above the other,
giving one an impression that a slight convulsion
might send them all sliding down into the sea".

"The harbor, or mole, is formed by a sea-wall
extending across the semi-circle made by the imme-
diate hills, securing anchorage where the vessels
moor stem and stern with their own anchors".

"must tell you that the Mole of Genoa is semicircular,
all the land rises in hills and terraces from the water, and the ship
lay in that part of the semicircle next the Porta della Lanterna, and
not above 300 to 400 yards from the whole field"

Hi Ambly thanks for the reply .
I did find this, and the date of 1815 matches his birthdate.

Will post  a request on the armed svscs board

"GENOA
Following the defeat of Napoleon in the spring of 1814, local elites, encouraged by the British agent Lord William Bentinck proclaimed the restoration of the old Republic, but it was decided at the Congress of Vienna that Genoa should be given to the Kingdom of Sardinia. British troops suppressed the republic in December of 1814, and it was annexed by Sardinia on January 3, 1815."

 "Pomer into Mole of Genoa"?
There is a village called Pomer, near Pula in Croatia.
Is it possible this person was born aboard a ship in the vicinity of Pomer, with the Mole of Genoa its next port of call?
