Miller John Edwin Jacob-Hastings
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 23:30 BST (UK) »
I have came up against a brick wall with my Gr Grandfather John Edwin Jacob Miller born c 1843. On the 1871 Census for West Malling, Kent, it stated that he was age 30 and born in Hastings, Sussex. Also an  entry for Catherine Miller (Daug) age 7  born in Hastings, Sussex, but his wife Harriett  was born in Barming, Kent which leads me to believe that John and daughter Catherine went to Kent prior to 1869 where he married Harriett Langridge in Kent.

On John and Harriett's marriage Certificate it stated that John was a Bachelor.

The only entry in the IGI for a Catherine Miller born in Sussex  around 1864 and close to Hastings is born in Cuckfield,West Sussex registered 1st Quarter in 1864.

Is there anyone who could look up to see who this Catherine's parents are, and maybe a John Edwin Jacob Miller born around 1841-44 in Hastings please.

I know this is not a lot of information to go on but would be very grateful for any information.

Kind regards
Barbara

Can you confirm that the details above refer to the 1871 census as there is no family with that profile in Kent in 1871 that I can find on Ancestry.  Did you use FindMyPast?

If you are sure you have the right marriage it would suggest that Catherine could be the illegitimate daughter of Harriet if they are shown as batchelor and spinster on the marriage cert

It is not possible to look up a birth found on freebmd - certificates need to be purchased

There is a John & Harriott Miller in Kent with a one year old daughter which sits well with an 1869 marriage

The 1871 Census is correct. RG10/917 Folio 19 page 29. District/Parish: West Malling. Address Back Street.

I did consider if Catherine was daughter of Harriett, but then discounted it as Catherine was born in Hastings, Sussex as was John, and then there was a gap until the next child born c1871 in Kent.
Carole, where did you find the family of John and Harriet with a one year old daughter?

Thanks for your interest.

Hi Barbara, where did you get the 1871 census ref.   I agree with Carole I can't see your family and the ref you give brings up no matches  :-\

Hi there

Have checked the Hastings Baptisms between 1700 and 1870

Sorry, but there is not a John or a Catherine baptized within that time period

Sorry

Hi

Quote
Carole, where did you find the family of John and Harriet with a one year old daughter?

They were living in Dartford Kent - all born there

John Miller 26 labourer at gunpowder mill
Harriott 25
Eliza Ellen 1
indexed as William Davis 13 but shown as female and I think it is Ann - wife's sister
RG10 Piece 885 Folio 28 Page 5

No John Miller/Harriett Davis marriage in Kent on freebmd 1866-1871

The reference you quote is not recognised on Ancestry which is why I asked if you were using a different website

I have checked piece number 917 for Miller but there is no listing

Do you have them on any later census as I cannot even find them in 1881 with the profile given

John , Harriett, and children Catherine, Charles and William left England for New Zealand in 1874 so therefore they will not appear in the 1881 Census. Harriett's maiden name is Langridge.

I have enough information on Harriett at this stage, but need to trace the movements of John and Catherine in Sussex.
John's NZ Death Certificate gives no age nor date of birth.

Thankyou Chris in 1066Land for searching the Baptisms for Hastings.

Hi CaroleW

Its on FindMyPast (It's taking me ages to download it)
John age 30
Harriett age 28
Kate age 7

Rosie
ADDED
The reference looks right though the 1 in the 917 could be mistranscribed as a 4 as its very feint -- I think it's right on FindMyPast though  ::)
