South Molton Baptism WATTS
« on: Wednesday 01 July 09 10:09 BST (UK) »
I have a baptism for William Watts as 25 Dec 1718 in South Molton. I was wondering if anyone could look up to see who his parents were.

Completed
Watts Westcott Irwin Gammon - Devon
Marchment Gale - Wiltshire
MacLeod MacSwain- Raasay, Scotland
Gazzard Partridge - Essex
Grimmett Harris - Oxfordshire
Brien - London
Poyser - Staffordshire
Johns Morris - Glamorgan, Wales

The baptism date you have 25 Dec 1718 is a member submission on the IGI.
The Bishops Transcripts extracts for the parish (Batch No. C052021) show that the following WAT(T)S children were baptised at South Molton, father - William:
5 Jan 1709/10 Eliz (Lady Day in March was the start of the year at this time)
20 Aug 1711 Rebeccah
25 Dec 1713 William
A William WATTS appears to have married a Rebecca UPHAM 12 Jun 1709, but the IGI reports this event taking place at both South & North Molton. I would suggest contacting the OPC for both parishes to see if she can clarify the dates and places. Go to http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/NorthMolton/index.html and scroll down to Genealogy for the link.

You'll note that the marriage was 12 Jun 1709, yet the IGI baptism transcription states that Eliz was baptised 5 Jan 1709.
Lady Day (March 25) was, until 1752, the first day of the ecclestiastical year. The year thus began in March, not January. So, a date shown in the IGI as 5 Jan 1709 was (by modern standards) actually 5 Jan 1710 and should be recorded as 5 Jan 1709/10.
