Completed Newcastle:childs death 1949
« on: Friday 03 July 09 17:33 BST (UK) »
I have just recieved a death cert for a child in 1949.  He died at 418 Westgate Road Wingrove Newcastle.  This was not his home address and I believe it was a hospital.  Could anyone give me information about this place and if indeed it was a childrens hospital or sanitorium.

Can anyone please tell me how i would find any medical records for this place if indeed it is a hospital.

Thank you

Hi

It's pretty close to the Newcastle General Hospital:

The Children's Hospital was in Jesmond though:

Not sure about the location of the records  :-\

Just looking through a long list of hospitals

Thanks for that.  Apparently it is the same place.  It later became the General Hospital.

Found some info on google.  But not a lot.

Institutions such as prisons, workhouses, or psychiatric hospitals had alternative addresses which were used when someone was born or died in them. 418 Westgate Road was the address of "Elswick Grange Institution" which was the workhouse, then from 1920 it was called Wingrove Hospital, and from 1930 it was Newcastle General Hospital.

See http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/

As this was in 1949, it would have been the General Hospital, stan  :)

Ummmm - we're talking about a death in 1949. As I said, from your evidence, it would have been the General Hospital then and not the workhouse.
