Spon street, Coventry
« on: Sunday 05 July 09 16:15 BST (UK) »
I`m trying to find Benjamin Kerby, born 1784, Middlesex.  In 1861 he was living in Spon Street, Coventry and had been a watchmaker.  I`ve found him in trade directories for1835 and 1850 listed as a watch case maker in Spon Street but can`t find him on the 1841 or 1851 censuses.  I use Ancestry and don`t think I can search a location unless I know its exact details.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jane

In 1841 he can be found at HO 107/ 1152 / Book 13/ Folio 4/ Page 1

His surname is transcribed (correctly) as Kirby.

That`s brilliant both of you. Thanks very much.  I presume he`ll still be in Spon Street in 1851 but if anyone could confirm that for me and tell me who he`s living with I`d be very grateful

Jane

The street index for Coventry (and most other places) is online as part of TNA's 'Your Archives'

http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Place:Coventry_Registration_District%2C_1851_Census_Street_Index

There are quite a number of references for Spon Street for you to search at your leisure.

Incidentally, despite the 're-planning by Luftwaffe'  of central Coventry some of the original buildings in Spon Street have survived.

Good luck

Thanks from me too,  for  that link, Mean-genie. I'm from Coventry, but haven't been  there for ages and it brought back lots of memories.  :)

Coventry was the scene of my mis-spent youth, haven't lived there since the 70s, but I've been back many times.

It's certainly changed a lot.

 - I hope you are reading this - following your information I`ve tracked down my family - it took a while as the name was mis-transcribed but I was very pleased with myself when I found them! I didn`t know about TNA`s `Your Archives` before but it looks like a very useful site.

Many thanks......... Jane
