*COMPLETED* Ann Mather NEWTON (Hyde), CHESHIRE - Look up
« on: Monday 06 July 09 13:32 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for information about Ann Mather my Great Grandmother.  I especially want to find out who her mother was.  I do not know where to look next, she doesn't seem to appear on the census returns (found on 1901 living with grandfather samuel).

Any help much appreciated!!!

Ann Mather (Anney on 1901 census) was born 17 July 1883 in Newton, Cheshire.  Her father was Thomas.

Please help!  I have reached a dead end.

Thanks
Jane

Hello and welcome to rootschat  :D

It is a puzzle isn't it.
She is with her grandfather in 1891 too - transcribed as Ann Mathes

1891  RG12; Piece: 3286; Folio 53; Page 13

Do you have her father's name from the marriage certificate? It could be that the name is invented, if she was illegitimate or the first name of her real father- that does happen.

Cheshire BMD has births for 1883 for Annie Mather Stockport with a mother named Ashton but I think she dies in 1884 and Sarah Ann Mather in Hyde.
Have you checked any of these?

Elizabeth A Mather is with her sister in 1891 at  RG12; Piece: 3287; Folio 6; Page 3.
I am wondering if she is the mother of Ann? As she is with her in 1901. :-\

If you need any of those census details- I can post them

Thank you for your quick and most helpful reply.

I have found her on  the census in 1891 as Ann Mathes.  She is indeed with Samuel and also Grace.  I have Samuels wife down as Ann Mattocks, but after a little digging have found she died in 1890 and he wasted no time in marrying Grace Cartledge (I think? - found marriage entry and death entry for Ann Mattocks).

I have got her fathers name Thomas from her Marriage certificate.  I have also found him on the censuses for 1861-1881, living with either Ann or Ann and Samuel.  Samuel was a gardener at Newton Lodge, so is based there on the 1901 and 1881 returns.

I think I have checked the annie mather Stockport entry, but will look further into the Sarah Ann Mather in Hyde - thanks.

It is a mystery as to whether Elizabeth A Mather is her mother, I did wonder?  Is there anything else I can do to prove this?  I suppose it is difficult if she was illegitimate?

I have also looked to find her brothers and sisters, but have not had any luck either!!!

thanks again for your help
Kind regards
Jane

Hello yes I saw Samuel as a gardener.

The best thing would be to try to get a birth certificate because that would have the mothers name.

The other thing I suppose would be if there was a baptism at the local church- whichever that would be  :-\

Maybe no connection, but my mother in law lived in 1955>, at 3, New Ridd Rise, Hyde ,in 1 , next door was a Mrs Mather, my guess would be that Mrs. Mather was born about 1880/90, she was 80 + years when she came to our wedding in 1963, i cannot recall her name, but sha had a sister who lived on the Grange estate, Hyde, Gee X area, my wife thinks Mrs Mather & her husband ran a pub in Hyde, circa 1940/50, he died in his 50s, & Mrs Mather retired soon after.
Hoping i have'nt confused the issue. Bodger

Hi Bodger

Thanks for your email.  I know Ann Mather married Joseph Timperley and they lived on Talbot Road, Newton, Hyde.  My Mother thinks she did have the following brothers and sisters: Thomas Mather, Maude Mather, Emma Mather, Edith Mather, Catherine Mather and Frances Mather.

So I suppose there could be a connection there somehow!

thanks again

Ji Jane,
I am confused now- are those names the names of Ann's brothers and sisters? I have looked but can't find appropriate ones.
Could your mother be mixing her generationd and these came later or earlier?

Hi
Yes brother and sisters of Ann.  Her brother apparently died young, but her sisters all lived to a good age, and my mother remembers them.  Ann said they were her sisters?  I cannot find any reference to any of them?

what do you think?
