Archibald GREY
« on: Wednesday 08 July 09 14:42 BST (UK) »
hello, ive just got the marriage cert for archibald grey and mary hambleton.he was a horse dealer,as was his son and grandson, and illiterate as his signature was a cross.whay suprised me was his father was john grey, silk manufacturer.that sounds quite grand.what suprised me even more was the the 1851 and 71 have his father john as a police officer.cant read what the 1841 says,no occ on 1861.on the 1881/1891 archibald is using the name john.does anyone else think thats a bit unusual,or am i being a bit stereotypical?also, theres no mention of silk manufacturing on the census.id appreciate any thoughts, thanks, nel.

Hi nel,

Would you like to give the census reference numbers so that we can have a look and perhaps help with reading the 1841 occupation?

I can see an Archibald aged 1 on 1851 census with father John a retired Police Officer Annuitant, and mother Martha, is that the right one?
Living in Glastonbury, Somerset though, not Kent?

If that's the right family, the 1841 census shows John's occupation as Ind, I think, meaning living on Independent means - possibly retired early from the Police?

The IGI has a Pedigree file for the family, showing John as a Police Officer in 1825 and lots more family information for wife Martha Clarke

hello barbara, many thanks for that.looking at the census, this archibald grey appears to be the only one born right time, and just about everything points towards him,but there are things that make me doubt.there are two deaths registered in swansea for an archibald grey, one born about 1853,the other 1854.i couldnt get the refs earlier as it stuck,so ill have another look now.id be very intrested in the martha clarke info, please would you tell me how id access that, thanks, nel.

Just go to http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp and enter Archibald Grey, England, click on search then scroll down to his entry under 'pedigree resource file' and you should see the information

Somewhere on there he is listed as Archibald John, so maybe that's why he used the name John later
