George Kirkham
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 18:14 BST (UK) »
Can anyone give me a hand finding information on George Kirkham, born abt 1829 in Lancashire and married Eleanor Davies in 1863. I find him in the 1881 census living in St Woolos, Newport, Monmouthshire having remarried to a Sarah following Eleanor's death in 1872. I know George was a seaman so may be a reason as to the lack of information if he was not in this country at the time.

Any pointers would be so much appreciated. ;)

Thanks for the quick reply, bit new to this so struggling slightly.

I am finding problems getting information prior to 1870 and only know that George's first wife Eleanor died in 1872 and had a son William Kirkham b1865.

birth registrations
William Kirkham dec qtr 1865 Newport, M vol 11a pg 181
Eleanor Jane Kirkham june qtr 1872 Newport vol 11a pg 190

From her death reg, it looks as if Eleanor may have died as a result of childbirth
Eleanor Kirkham 34 june qtr 1872 Newport vol 11a pg 107

marriage reg
George Kirkham june qtr 1863 Newport vol 11a pg 229 with Ellen Davis on the same page
Getting the marriage cert should give you the names of both fathers and their occupations and help you find them in earlier census years.

Thanks Osprey,

I will get the marriage cert and see if that can get me moving. I did think that with the surname Kirkham that it may be easier to find information but I have found it easier with the Jones side of my family.

Thanks

suspect that the name lends itself to mis-transcription. I've looked for William with mother Eleanor/Ellen with no surname in 1871 and still haven't spotted them as yet.
