This brickwall is giving me a headache  :'(  I'm hopeful that someone can help me solve the mystery of Thomas Leightley's whereabouts.

ANN LEIGHTLEY - Thomas's daughter - is my OH's 2 x Great Grandmother and from the Census/BMD Indexes Ann was b. abt 1824 at Old Moor/Bothal, Northumberland.  In 1st Q of 1845 Ann married JOHN MARSHALL at Morpeth.  1858 John dies leaving 6 children - Thomas b.abt 1845, Ann b.abt 1851, Elen? b.abt 1851, Margaret b.abt 1854, John b.abt 1857, and James b.abt 1860.  The 1861 Census records Ann as resident Housekeeper to Henry and Albert Milburn at Church Row, Bedlington.  Ann subsequently marries HENRY MILBURN  on 28.12.1861 at St Nicholas, Newcastle - they have 2 daughters Isabella b. 30.05.1861 near Newsham (OH's g.grandmother) and Ellen b. abt 1872 Cowpen Colliery, Blyth.  On the marriage record ANN's father is named as THOMAS LEIGHTLEY ..... can I find him ..... NO ..... I've searched the 1841 Census,  and IGI Records ... No Luck.  I have a trip to Northumberland planned for November but thats a way off and my patience/curiosity cannot be waiting that long so ............ any info, tips, guidance, suggestions whatever ... I would love to hear from you!

In anticipation, many thanks

As always ... ever hopeful

Hi Polly

Have you had a look through the Bishops' Transcripts?

There is a possible brother for Thomas in 1851 census  -  Edward Leightley b.Longhirst, the IGI has his baptism 1798 Bothal, parents George Leightley and Ann Taylor - other siblings seem to be John, Elizabeth and Margaret

Hi Polly & Barbara

I just had a look at the index for the on line Bishops' Transcripts and the parish of Bothal seems to be missing.

All the best

Hi Gobbo,
He could have come from anywhere in that region, it's a case of trawling through the surrounding parishes  :-\

Polly,
What was his occupation on either of Ann's marriage certificates?

There is a Thomas LIGHTLEY on 1851 census aged 64 born Longhorsley, which isn't too far from Morpeth

Hello Polly

There's also a Thomas Lightly on 1851 living at Westoe, Durham - age 54 born Bothal. If he is not your Thomas he could be related.

Hi all,

Polly, have you discounted the Thomas Lightly and family living at Whickham, Durham, in the 1841 census? HO107/302/14 F. 18 Page 2
Whickham is only about 15 miles from Bothal.
Thomas Lightly    50    Pitman
Thomasine  "       45
Robert         "       14
Henry           "       10
Thomasine    "       9
Elizabeth      "       6

None of the family born in county, which could indicate they were all born over the border in Northumberland.

FindMyPast has a marriage indexed at Bedlington, Northumberland, between a Thomas Leightley and Thomasina Bormand, on 25 April, 1814.
Bedlington is about three miles from Bothal.
This marriage is also listed on an index at Genuki - http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/Transcriptions/NBL/MBED.html

Maybe I'm on the wrong track altogether, but it could be something for you to check when you visit Northumberland!

The Thomas I gave for 1851 was the one married to Thomasina  - although they don't have a daughter Ann living with them in either census

In 1841 census there is an Ann living with the Edward Leightley I found in 1851 - no relationships given, but she is a little young to be your Ann

Her baptism really is necessary, so you may have to look at the parish records for that

Hello Polly

Possible baptism ex FindMyPast

23 November 1823
Ann LEIGHTLEY
Fathers Forenames: Thomas
Occupation: Hind (?)
Mothers Forenames: Thomasina
Abode: Longhirst
Place: Bothal  Northumberland

Ivan

Supplement:
Apparently a "Hind" was a farm labourer who lived in a tied cottage and may have had to provide a female servant to work on the farm.
