1851 census Dawley area - John Lovett
« on: Saturday 26 February 05 19:21 GMT (UK) »
I would be very grateful for a look-up for John Lovett (or Lovatt / Lovet) in 1851.  He was born 1830/31 and was married at Malins Lee Chapel in Dawley in 1857.  According to the marr. cert. his father was William Lovatt, a labourer.  It would be helpful to know his mother and siblings.
Thanks in advance

Couldn't find him in Dawley 1851 but could this be his family in Wellington 1841?

William Lovett 39 labouer, Mary 60, John 11, Ann 9, William 8, George 4, Mary 1, Eliza 3 mth. Family were living at New Dale.

Hi Helen -

Thanks very much for looking.  It seems a definite possibility: the dates and names, including his father, seem right.   According to the 1881 census he was aged 51, born in Wenlock- but that is very near Wellington, isn't it?

I'll look for a bit more evidence - but thanks for pointing me in this direction.

If John's wife was from Dawley, do you have her details from 1851?

I have Madeley 1841, Wellington 1841 and Dawley 1851 transcriptions so if there's anything else you need looking up just ask.

From IGI, the last three children on the 1841 were baptised at Wellington but the older children don't appear on the Wellington registers. Perhaps they moved from Little Wenlock around 1836?

1. MARY LOVET - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 NOV 1838 Wellington, Shropshire, England

 2. GEORGE LOVETT - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 09 APR 1837 Wellington, Shropshire, England

 3. ELIZA LOVETT - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 14 MAR 1841 Wellington, Shropshire, England

Parents for above three were William & Mary.

Hi Helen -

This has been fantastically helpful!! :D

With your help from 1841, I have found this family in 1851 (I have Gordon Beavington's census CD for Salop - area 9, page 40) :

Wellington, New Dale -
William Lovat    Head  Marr  48  Labourer    Bolas Salop
Mary     "        wife  Marr         49    -            Little Wenlock
(I think Mary's age you have recorded 1n 1841 may be an error)
Anne     "         daur unm        19   pit girl         "        "
William  "        son   Unm      17     pit boy     Wellington
George  "        son   Unm     14     pit boy             "
Mary     "         daur     -           12  pit girl              "
Eliza     "         daur     -           10   at home         "
Richard  "        son      -          1         -            Wellington

So they did move from Little Wenlock to Wellington between 1831-1834, just as you predicted.

The fact that John Lovett is not there in 1851 is not a concern - he was certainly part of the family in 1841, and was almost certainly born in Little Wenlock - so it all ties in.  He will probably be somewhere nearby as a single person - he didn't get married until 1857.

I have also found his wife's family in 1851, Dawley -
John Edwards  Head   54    Labourer   Dawley, Salop
Frances   "       wife       52    -                    "      "
John   "            son      22    Roller              "      "
Ellen   "            daur      19  Stone picker    "     "
Frances   "       daur       17  Servant           "     "
Thomas   "       son      14    labourer     Wenlock
Henery (sic) "   son      12       "                    "

I feel fairly confident about these families being my ancestors - and I am very grateful for your help which has enabled me to piece the separate bits of information together.

My next task is to follow up the parents...

Thanks very mcuh for your help.

Mike E
