Stepney/Stratford Essex - Looking for George White
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 09:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I hope someone can help.
I'm looking for George White - He married Susannah Cowell on 6th February 1838 at Stepney. He was a Mariner.
On the 1861 Census, he was at sea. Born about 1818 at Stratford, Essex.
I have researched the Cowell family, but know nothing of the Whites.
I would love to know more about him - birth, parents, death etc.
Can anyone help???
Shakel

Hi, Shakel,

There's a George Francis White, born 12th May, 1808 in Stepney, on the I.G.I.

I haven't found anything closer, yet, but I'm still looking.

Added: Also a George White born 1819, Stepney.

You'll have to get their marriage certificate for more clues!

'Hat.

Hi 'Hat,
Thank you for the reply.
Those George's are a little too early and a little too late.
On the 1861 Census it has him being born at Stratford - but I can't seem to find anything there

If you have the marriage cert, what does it say for fathers name and occupation?

I got the date from an IGI entry - then confirmed it on the FreeBMD - have now sent for the certificate - now waiting.
It takes about 3 -4 weeks to get to Aus - I'm impatient!!

Hi Shakel

Stratford in 1818 would be part of the parish of All Saints West Ham (which has no coverage on the IGI). West Ham baptism registers 1813-1835 have been indexed on this website.

http://www.parishregister.com/searchpage.asp

There is a charge for a search or you can purchase the CD.

The 1861 census shows two George Whites both born Stratford at about the same time.

Valda

Hi Valda,
Thanks for the reply.
2 George Whites!! He was a seaman/mariner - does that help to separate them?
Thank you for the link.

Hi Shakel

Not for potential baptisms circa 1818 in West Ham parish registers.
