F/Sgt J Anderson - RAF 76 Squadron
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 10:02 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am researching the crew of a RAF Halifax bomber that was shot down 25/4/44.
In particular F/Sgt J Anderson (service No 1573409) who was the rear gunner and sole survivor of the crash. I know he is Scottish and enlisted in the RAF at Edinburgh. I have contacted the British Legion and RAF 76 Squadron Association but they have no record of him.

I would like to contact any possible relatives, can anyone help?

Details of the crews last operation can be seen on the website below.

thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I had a look at the link you posted, very good. Nice if every aircrew had something like that.

The army service records seem to have changed, there doesnt seem to be the need to be n-o-k anymore, not sure if its the same with RAF?

Sorry to sound like the voice of doom, but have you checked the CWGC site, just in case.

I'm sure someone else will be along shortly who can help more, I hope you are succesful.

Pete

Hi Peter,

The website is fairly new but they do a great job.

I believe proof of n-o-k is still required for RAF service records. Could not find F/Sgt J Anderson

Home address is given on any Liberation Report made in 1945. This would probably be the best starting point.

I can only find one F/Sgt Anderson as a P.O.W. in Germany--F/Sgt. T.J Sanderson 1333456   Stalaf Luft 1   No. 2422.

If he made a report on Liberation it will be at Kew : File WO344/7/1

Hi Brian,

I'm afraid you are barking up the wrong tree looking at PoW details.

The aircraft was shot down by an intruder over the UK.

The link makes this clear.

F/Sgt Anderson was injured and survived.

Hi ,
thanks for that, I just presumed the Aircraft was shot down in Europe.

Should have looked first.

Hi Everyone,

the Halifax was shot down by Lt Wenning of II./KG51 and crashed opposite Colony Farm, near Welney Norfolk. A few months ago I visited the area and spoke with a couple of locals who remembered it.  The only survivor F/Sgt J Anderson (rear gunner) was badly injured and trapped in his turret. He was later rescued by the then Welney fire service.  I believe he was taken to Ely RAF Hospital.  After making a full recovery he went back to thank them, but not many people could understand him due to his broad Scottish accent.

Mike.

The message that said you need to be NOK to obtain records is correct.  If you contact 3rd Party Disclosures, Room 221b, Trenchard Hall RAF Cranwell, Sleaford, NG34 8HB they will send you the appropriate forms so you can obtain your relatives.

I am currently trying to find out whether 76 Sqn have an Assn as 75 Sqn (with whom I have a link) do.  Will let you know if I find anything....

It might be worth writing to a local Edinburgh newspaper to put something in their letters page to see if you can get either him or his relatives to contact you.

Good luck with your search.  I had the help of the NZ and UK 75 Sqn Assn secretaries in mine!
