New to sussex
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 16:35 BST (UK) »
I am searching for Kentfields who may have been in and around Tillington in the late 1600s.

James Kentfield and his wfe Elizabeth Edsall wre married in Hurst Berkshire in 1681.  The reason I am looking here is because I have found two references to Kentfield in the National Archives concerning them both.  Tillington and North Chapel were mentioned.

I am probably looking in completely the wrong place but I have to start somewhere.

They had a son William who went to America around 1700. I am hoping to find that he had brothers who would have carried the name Kentfield down to my 4X Great Grandfather William who was born in Warfield Berkshire in 1739.

Any help or pointers would be much appreciated,
Abiam

Hi Abiam, & welcome to the Sussex board  :)
On the Sussex marriage Index there are 24 marriages of the name KENTFIELD with variations between 1628-1836, none in Tillington but 2 in Northchapel.
Let me know if I can help you further,

jane

Hi Abiam

I checked Tillington on the Sussex Family History Group baptism database and found the following two:

(Sadly Northchapel is only covered from 1716)

tillington, All Hallows
James Kempfield baptised 25 October 1685 to James
Elizabeth Kentfield baptised 9 August 1696 to James

Hi,
Thank you both for your help.   :)

I have William as born 1682/3 so the James 1685 could well be a brother who stayed at home.

And Elizabeth Edsall could well be correct - it is her brother John who is the testator in the will I found.

I have the 1681 marriage of the parents.  If there is a marriage in the area for James that might be useful too and the Northchapel ones please.

I think I am looking in the proverbial haystack on this one!  But I would love to know where the Kentfields originated so thank you for your interest,
Abiam

That's great, thank you.  I am finding all sorts of bits and pieces about the Kentfields via Google and hopefully your help will put some of it together,
Cheers,
Abiam
