I'm just starting to researh a possible family connection in Killearn, Kippen, Alva and Fintry, amongst others.
I wonder if anybody recognises any of the people.
James ROY m. Margarrat YUILL in Killearn 11 Dec 1767.
I can't find any baptisms in Killesarn that fit John. The nearest was in Alva, 23 miles away, in 1731, to James ROY and Elspeth BLACCADDER, which would make the younger John an unlikley 36 when married.
The most likley Margarrat seems to be baptised 1 May 1747 in Killearn, parents Thomas YUILL and Elizabeth BUCHANAN.
Thomas YUILL and Elizabeth BUCHANAN had banns read in Fintry 26 May 1741 and Killearn 29 May 1741.
For Elizabeth IGI gives 'of Ballglass Killearn, father John', and a birth abt 1720. SP has two possible baptisms - 23 April 1721 parents John BUCHANAN and Janet BUCHANAN, and 19 Nov 1721 parents John BUCHANAN and Margaret ANDESSON. The first is the best fit for an age of 20 at marriage. The latter would have been aged 19.
.
A rootsweb rresearcher has Thomas YUILL christened 20 March 1721 in Kippen, parents William YUILL and Agnes GILFILLAN. That researcher has William baptised in 1792, SP has 1796, the same for Agnes. They married 17 April 1718 in Kippen.
The deductions that brought me here are a series of marriages in Dalry, Ayr.
Andrew ROY m. Ann Crawford 7 July 1792
John ROY m. Elizabeth Crawford 14 Mar 1794 (my 4x gr grandparents)
Janet ROY m. William Milar 8 Oct 1800
Willaim ROY m. Isbell Kerr 3 Dec 1809 (marriage booked, but did not marry)
None were baptised in Dalry (there are no earlier ROY families in Dalry). It looks like some at least were siblings of an incoming family. So far I've only found John and Janet in any census. In 1841 John is age 65 born ooc between, giving a birth date range 1771-75. In 1851 Janet puts her birth in 1779/80 in Killearn.
In Killearn I found likely parents in James ROY and Margarrat YUILL. Their children, that I've found, were:
ANDREW ROY c.7 Nov 1768 Killearn
MARGARRET ROY c.8 Dec 1771 Killearn
JOHN ROY c.20 Feb 1773 Killearn
MARY ROY c.1 Dec 1781 Glasgow
So, not fitting are the JANET and WILLIAM ROY who married in Dalry, and Margarret and Mary who didn't marry in Dalry, or appear as spinsters in the 1841 census. However there are burials recorded in Glasgow for both a Margaret Roy and a Mary Roy, which could be them and which I am following up. Also, though no baptism can be found for Janet, her first daughter and second son were named Margaret and John.
Also looking at naming conventions John ROY and Elizabeth Crawford named their first son James, and second son John the same as her father. I have found two daughters for Andrew and Ann, named Margaret and Ann.
All a bit tenuous I know, and I am searching deeper, but in the meantime if anyone can help me short circuit by identifying and eliminating or confirming any of the above I'd be grateful.
